Build Info from VIN (Color, Trim, etc.)

Is there a way to find out the build info for my 72 by using the VIN? I know you can get the place, year,engine size.... But I was wondering about options or original color. Anyone have any Info?

There should be another tag under or near the vin that gives the paint and trim codes. The vin doesn’t reveal the info your looking for.

You can look in the factory service manual for some information: http://www.c104.net/manual/Section_00A.pdf

You can determine the engine option, transmission option, and suspension option. If the paint and trim tag is in place, you can determine original color and (for a CJ) bench or buckets and vinyl color (buff or black). Anything else would require the dealer's invoice.

No paint tag I would guess that went the way of the DODO when the body was replaced. I guess I'm outta luck on any other info.
