I have a friend that has a cj7 with a 258 in it. Well he doesnt like being bottom dog either so he just bought a 360 for it from a j10 truck. What motor mounts does he need, and what other parts should we get on order. Thanks

you will need at least the motor mounts from a 360 or 401 and probably the radiator from a V8. Someone who has done a swap will have a better idea of parts needed. Have you done a search here yet?

It's best to use an I6 heavy-duty radiator (3 core). The V8 fuel line is on the driver's side while the I6's in passenger side.

I am not too worried about fuel line location and such, but as a chevy guy that doesnt care for AMC motors I am very limited on motor mount info on these engines

Awe cmon somebody has to know which motor mounts he will need. If I dont figure this out soom I will have to put in a chevy motor and use the AMC for a boat anchor.

Not quite sure what you expect - step by step instructions? It's likely that noone on this board has done this swap on a late model Jeep. Not excatly the prime focus of this board. My first move would be to find a late Jeep with a V8 and make some measurements. You may have to move the frame mounts, or else get frame mounts from a 76-on V8 CJ, or add/remove a little steel from the existing mounts. I'd suggest you get out your tape measure and find out.

I thought, and since no one else has chimed in here I will (keep in mind I'm no AMC expert), that the V8's and I6's used the same engine mounts in the CJ?

    You might look into it.

Otherwise the Ford 302 from Fox body Mustangs is a nice swap. Two right side (once again I think) engine mounts from a 258 it seems like or sumsuch. Been a loooonnnnggggg time since I discussed any of this type of stuff.

I'd ask John Nutter, jnutter here in the forum or head over to http://www.jeepwire.com/ where you can find him and a few other extremely knowledgeable folk in this area.

IIRC all he needs is the right hand motor mount (the one that bolts to the the frame rail)from a CJ that had a v-8 originally. The AMC engines have the water hoseses the same location so if he had a 3-core he's all set otherwise he needs 3-core rad. Check the pilot bushing to make sure it matches the input shaft diamter of the CJ's tranny. Also the clutch disk spline could be differnt. Other than that it will bolt right in. I was going to do this swap in one of my cj's but I couldn't find a good 360. I helped a buddy do did this swap and it went right in once we had the right clustch disk. If you need more info drop me a PM.

Thanks guys, this is the info I was looking for. We are replacing all the clutch components and a new gasket set and cam. I knew some of the motor mounts would swap, but some were different. After reading this we have ordered new poly mounts for a 360 in an amc cj7. They guy informed me they would fit. Again thanks

One of the guys I talked to in the past about this motor swap was Salvage Jeep parts in Statesboro, GA. They had the correct frame mounts in stock.
