Hi guys. Finally found the part I needed to ressurect my Warn OD. My spider was all rusty and when I had it repaired back in the olden days the machinest took to much off so it sat in a box in the garage for the last 10 years. Now does any one know if I change the spider (planetary gears 4)gears into the huskey spider(term from the online Warn OD manual) will it fit my warn 29 tooth gear. The planetary gears have a slightly differant lean to them if held vertical and will not fit. I e-mailed the Overdrive guru Mr H.Tilford but have yet to recieve a reply.
And has anyone removed the planetary gears?Seems you just have to drift out the roll pin and then tap out the center pin. Is this true? I don't want to hammer these pins in and then find out there stuck in place inside. Sorry for the length of this post but I had to get this off of my mind its been eating at me for a day or two. Thanks again. Jim. Keep on Jeepin eh.

I gather that Herm is very generous with information, but you may be asking for "trade secrets" with a question that specific to his main stock-in-trade.

I think you could remove the planetary gears.
Remember - if it was put together, you should be able to take it apart.

Because the planet gears were a serviceable part, I'd suspect that you could remove them the way you describe.

I don't remember what the re-assembly issue was, but there is something important about the way you re-assemble the planetary gears.

So, there is an issue there - it will probalby become apparent when you try to put it back together.

Oh, by the way, I have no idea as to whether or not internal OD parts would be interchangeable, however, if they were identical in every way it would seem that would be a patent infringement.

At the same time, if the parts were 'off the shelf' gears made by either an external OEM, or to some sort of SAE industry standard, they could be the same.

I'd start with the assumption that they were different until I could prove otherwise.

It is my understanding that the gears will not swap between the Husky and Warn/Saturn overdrives because the pitch is indeed different.

    From Herm's website:

"Few parts will interchange between the Husky design and the Warn/Saturn/ATV design. Some of the replacemnent parts for the Saturn OD will not directly interchange with the Warn. One major change is the spline shaft. If you need to replace the spline shaft in a Warn OD, it will require machining to your spyder blank for proper fit using the same part from AA."

    HTH :)

Herm has an amazing parts inventory, give him a try. He is a one-man shop, and it sometimes takes a while for him to get back to you, but he will give you the straight poop.

I'm convinced that he either has cornered the world market for Jeep overdrive parts, or he has a basement full of illegal aliens cranking them out 24/7/365.

    <just kidding!> :D

60CJ6 - even if you get to a point of - what the *^%^&% did I do to myself? Herm will bail you out... Call him, ship the box of 'stuff' to him, get working OD back. I knew a guy in North Denver that thought 'It can't be that tough' and went through that process.

The problem with the OD stuff is the specs, and some are just press in distances. That is why I had Herm press new bearings in a bowl gear (even though I had a press and a working one as a sample) as he has all the jigs to get them right.

    Just food for thought.

Its done. I now have a functioning overdrive. After spending all day yesterday and most of today. What a time investment. Sure liked the way warn put the planetary together compared to husky, mechanic friendly.I'll give it the back and forth to work work out for a week and then go back into it and retourque the nut.Took it around town and out to talk to a fellow jeep parts collector sure was nice doing 55 with out yelling to talk to my daughter.
