Can anyone tell me anything about this RHD DJ? The shop that has it bought it out West (rust-free), and said they were told it was a topless DJ prototype. It's 2WD, automatic, RHD, and very clean for the age.

Any guesstimates regarding the value of this Jeep?

Just curious, as it looks like a VERY clean, unique old early CJ-5.

    Thanks,
    Craig

I wouldn't value it as high as a similar condition 67 ECJ5 with LHD.
    But that's just me ;)

    Follow-up questions...

    • Will a rear seat bolt into this Jeep easily? (I have two small daughters)
    • What motor would this Jeep have?
    • Will an Intermediate Dana 44 rear bolt in? (I believe it will)
    • Any quirks regarding this era Early CJ? i'm mostly familiar with '81+ CJs, YJs & (most recently) my '05 LJ.
    • Can anyone protect me from Boyink? He's going to harass me for even considering this Jeep. R)

The guy who has it wants two things I have - an '84 Alaskan Postal Scrambler (rough, but restorable) and a CJ-10a military tub. I'm just wondering if a possible trade deal would be wise for me. I'm a sucker for unique Jeep stuff. The condition of this one captured my interest. I also know what the seller has invested in it.

I'm wondering how this 2WD (maybe with a locker added to the rear) would do for mild trail rides here in Michigan.

...which in this condition would be roughly how much $$$?

BTW Sparky, I e-mailed Jim. Thanks for the suggestion.

    1. Should, tub's the same as a ECJ-5 right?
    2. ?Chevy 4 cylinder?
    3. Don't know but don't see why not
    4. Ross steering with this one?
    5. Stretch it, then he'll never notice
    6. Sure, throw a locker in it and have fun two tracking.

Me, I'd make the trade and fix it up for a round-town runabout. That looks like it would clean up real nice, and you'd likely have the only one around. Back seat shouldn't be a problem, lots of aftermarkets available, and I'd guess it has a 134c.i. F-head. Driving it might be wierd though, with the RHD, but you'd get used to it.

I'd still love to have it. It would make a great complement to my red '56! Compare it to my avatar photo.

I doubt it's any kind of prototype. No top doesn't mean anything - just means that it's a DJ-5, not a DJ5A (postal Jeep). Jeep made DJs with right and left hand drive along with the CJ production.

It could be a F134 or a 153 Chevy. I'd guess that the F134 would have a Borg-Warner automatic, while the 153 would have a Powerglide.

I wouldn't have too much enthusiasm for this Jeep - 2WD, RHD, oddball drivetrain, too nice to take the body for a CJ. Do you want to deal with RHD regularly? JMO.

I believe he also said that one side had the standard CJ-5 door opening, while the other side had a squared-off opening. I'll have to ask him about this again the next time I talk with him.

Scroll down on this page and you'll find a '68 DJ-6 with F134, RHD and automatic.

Similar. I think $3000 is way high, but it is a '6. Not much market for DJs IME, except for collectors and Jeep enthusiasts - very few will want to own it so that they can drive it.

So much of price is driven by area...
DrewDog on this board bought a DJ5 with a rust-free tub for something like $1500 - $1800 IIRC, maybe less, swapped the tub onto his trail rig.
IMHO, That's the right price range for an original, rust-free DJ5.

That would be an M170, or the Mil version of the CJ6.

timgr - Thanks for the link. I hadn't checked out the classified section of that site prior to you posting it. I do like that CJ-6, and the $3K price doesn't seem that crazy to me (but I'm not as familiar with these early CJs as you guys are). I do know that it looks clean, and you don't see many '6s around. I also like the complete CJ-10a (although I wouldn't have a use for it in stock form).

Rondog - The DJ-5 is located on the East side of Michigan, but was purchased by the current owner from a guy in Arizona.

Mmm...that's a long ways from Denver, probably cost as much in gas to go get it as the Jeep itself. Just what I need too, another project that I don't have money or parking for. Sure like the looks of it though, wonder if it's that cherry all over.
