Had a similar problem today it would miss above 1/2 throttle and run perfectly at idle. Popped the distributor cap and found some water in it. Dried it out and its good as new.

condensor sounds good. HEI sounds better..=)
come to think of it, my old ford did NOT backfire, it just wouldnt run under a load.
more than just ignition or valves will cause backfiring, a loose exhaust header will suck air and pop whats left in the header especially when you let off the throttle, but this doesnt have anything to do with his symptoms. (i used to have loose headers on an old GMC 4x4 when in virginia and would wind up my truck JUST to go through the tunnels in norfolk. let off the gas at about 5k rpm and POP POP POP)
there might be more to it.
i still think either coil or now maybe condensor.
    hope you find it yo..=)

Started the Jeep yesterday. It started OK, stumbled a bit until it warmed up, as usual. I noticed some water coming out the exhaust pipe... I often get some spitting/condensation on start up when it's cold... it wasn't cold yesterday, and I was getting ALOT more water than normal. But I didn't think much more about it (gave a passing thought to head gasket, but my coolant level is stable.) I allowed it to idle a bit while I looked around the engine bay. Normally when I first start it and apply a little bit of choke it will idle a bit high, then load up as it gets warm and start to stumble. It will die if I don't readjust the choke. While doing this yesterday, it hadn't started to load up yet, then just stopped. It started OK immediately after that and it ran OK going around the block... then I just put it away, didn't have time to fool with it, and it wasn't showing the symptoms like before. (I was mentally attributing that to it not being at full operating temp yet, the coil wasn't heated up yet...)

I was reading Zila's post from yesterday, where he finally found the cause of his rig cutting out on a hill... water in the gas.

Reading his post, I recall my buddy BroncoJohnny saying his Bronco was running a bit rough on the way home from Tioga (mine didn't... until 10 miles from home... with maybe 1/8 tank of gas remaining...)

Have you ever heard of Occam's Razor? Essentially, the simplest explanation is usually the right answer... I find in troubleshooting that's usually the case. Well with all of the troubleshooting input you have all provided, water in the gas is probably the simplest cause/simplest fix...
I'll get a tank of fresh gas from a name-brand place, and a bottle of DryGas and see what happens... hopefully I'll have time to do that later this week.

Well it's not bad gas... added dry-gas and 3/4 tank of fresh... didn't help.

Also not the coil. Bought a cheap coil, installed it, no improvement.

I did notice while fooling around, that the distributor cap moved too easily. I pulled the cap and it seems that the springs in the spring loaded hold downs don't have much resistance. I also noticed some mud droplets  on the sensor mounting plate...
so maybe my problem has been loose cap... although I had no symptoms while offroad in the mud, symptoms didn't start until I was 170 miles/3 hours away, running great the whole time.

I'll look into a new cap and rotor for it.

If the problem turns out to be my Pertronix module, I think I may just swap over to HEI in that case. I have an OF HEI on the shelf, but I will need a new PS pump bracket as well as cap/rotor/plug/wires.

Anyone have a spare 231 PS pump bracket laying around??
