Not that I'm having any serious problems, but what could I expect to spend on a Warner T90 3 speed tranmission rebuild? Clutch is not slipping, nore does it pop out of gear (unless in second and using transmission to slow down), but gears are being ground sometimes, ocasionally it won't go into gear, makes noise and drips oil most of the time.

I had a C3 transmission rebuilt in my Mustang many a year ago and remember it costing about $600 or so. What is the average cost of a Jeep transmission rebuild/refurbish?

    Just curious.

you describe enough conditions with your trans that realistically you might be very close $$ wise by the time you get done.
At the very least, small parts kit, synchro rings, front and rear bearings.
You could find 2nd gear is bad, mainshaft or input gear: gears cost $$.
( Someone offers 2nd gear with the rebuild kit, Novak?)
Even though you don't plan on clutch replacement, I think it would be foolish to not inspect it while you have it apart. This would be the time if you were going to do it.
Clutch price is a known figure; the trans is going to be the big unknown until it's disassembled and inspected.

My rebuilding skills are not exactly what I would say, strong. It took me almost a year to muster up enough hoohaa to redo the steering bellcrank. Transmission rebuilt myself I'm afraid would put me in way over my head.

The trade thing with Herm might be a pretty good route. Might look into that some as well.

So basically, it sounds like I'm headed in the direction of having to do something with my transmission, no? Never having owned a Jeep, I'm not sure what is an acceptable amount of noise, grinding, or dripping out of a 53 year old transmission. Hell, it could be my transfer case for all I know making the noise.

Take advantage of working with Sparky.

You'll feel a whole lot better after doing your own rebuild than you will laying out $$$ for an already rebuilt one. The experience is something that transcends monetary value. :)

If you have the $$$ available, rebuild the tcase at the same time. Might as well, instead of pulling it out AGAIN next year to do the tcase...

If a monkey like me can do it with no experience............The tranny is a snap, the transfer case is a little more time consuming, and requires a dial indicator to fine-tune shaft play. I have a box of "special tools" that I made that were recommended at Vernco. You can borrow those if you like.

Well carp, you guys have just about convinced me to try this with Sparky and MOP's tools. Of course, the tranmission is working and if I wasn't just sitting here being bored at work, I probably wouldn't even be thinking about it. My goal for this fall/winter was to replace the shackels and try to figure out how to replace U-joints. But now.......a smooth running tranny sure is tempting.. :)

ok, so I lied...those are the tools and instructions I used.

Dondo....If you decide to go ahead with it, it will probably be easiest on Sparky (and maybe me if I feel like going for a Kansas stroll) if you remove it, tear it down partially in order to do an inventory on what is needed, then order the rebuild stuff from Herm. (and maybe order a new clutch kit, transfer case parts, have the flywheel resurfaced etc.)

Removing everything is pretty easy, as gravity is on your side. I would want the most help putting it all back together and installing it in the vehicle. I rebuilt and installed mine by myself 'cause Sparky was in Tellico, and I am impatient.

Don't know what tools you have for the job, but he (or we) could bring dial indicator/magnetic base/calipers/brass punches/torque wrenches/ and the "special tools" I mentioned before.

After using more than 10 cans of brake cleaner cleaning up my stuff...I decided buying a can or tub a parts cleaner would have made much more sense.

    just my $.02

Sounds like a good idea. Of course, I don't have any idea what the specific parts are and if they look bad or not, but I guess that's what digital camera's and webboards are for .. ;)

Taking things apart, I'm fairly good at. Putting back together...well, thats another story.

I don't have any of that stuff. Pretty much your standard sockets, wrenches, pliers, screw driver type stuff is all I have. I have a big hammer though. That might help. ;)

I was kind of wondering how I was going to get the thing cleaned up. Buy a big tub and dump a couple of gallons of cleaner in it I guess. Might be kind of a pain though if this takes place this winter. I'll think on this part more.

The gears and shaft are pretty easy to diagnose. You basically just look for metal that is excessively worn or chipped.
