Hello my neighbor has been storing this jeep in his old shed for the last 10-15 years or so, he had big plans but passed away. i was wondering what it was and also what it was worth. It looks like a fun project and something fun to drive around but i cant afford it right now.

:? You own or your neighbor owns? Your subject says "what do I own" then you ask what your neighbor owns(ed)????

    It's a CJ5 with a V8? of some sort that's not a Buick. Chevy?

Oh! I can tell you it's a CJ5 and what it doesn't have, not an F-head or Dauntless V6. Someone here can tell you what the V8 is I'm sure if you're uncertain.

It's an Early 5, transfer case parking brake and grill were the main things that clued me in on that. I didn't look to hard after that. ;)

Chevy was my first guess by the rear HEI and the bellhousing. Something just didn't look right for some reason. Been a couple years since I owned one of those things. ;)

Ok, assuming all of the parts are from the same year, it is prior to 1970 by the grill. I was thinking pontiac or olds on the engine. clear shots of the engine side of the hood and fenders may shed some more light. by the way, where is the tub?

by the number of sets of add on lights (on hood and grille) I would expect it spent some time with a plow on the front.

Ifn ya decide to part it out, I might be interested in the front fenders.

Not an Olds for sure since I've had a couple of them. Honestly, it looks like a Chevy to me. Easy way to tell - if the starter is on the passenger-side it's a Chevy. If it's on the driver's side, it's a Pontiac. Chevy - starter on pass., rear distributor. Buick - starter on pass, front distributor Olds/Pontiac - starter on driver, rear distributor.

Either way, there's a pretty good chance the engine is locked up if it's been sitting like that with the carb exposed for any period of time. Shoot some Marvel's in the cylinders through the spark plug hole a week or so prior to trying to fire the engine. May also need to pop off the valve covers and get happy with the Marvel's oil and a hammer to get the valves unstuck.

Bellhousing isn't right for a BOP that I can tell. Exhaust ports are too high for a Pontiac. I've had a few of those.

The engine is Chevy, definitely not Pontiac. Look at the bell housing. Pontiacs didn’t have that peak at the top center where it mates to the engine block.
I’d assume it’s a 350 cid from the big cap HEI and since Chevy put a gazillion of those things in there trucks and Caprice’s, Malibu’s, Camero’s, yada yada, all through the ‘80’s.
The front diff is Dana 25 or 27, closed knuckles, the t-case is a Dana 18 and that transmission looks like a T-90 from what I can see of it, don’t quote me on that since I don’t know that much ‘bout Jeep transmissions.
Since it’s got the round short fenders and is old enough to have a Dana 25/27 I’m guess’n it’s a ’71 or older CJ-5.
Can’t see the rear to tell you what it is, but it’s probably an offset Dana 44.

Its a chev alright. From the looks of the heat riser and two barrel rotenchester I would guess late 70's early 80's 305. Its interesting how they moved the alt down and used the smog pump bracket to mount it. Also looks like an early cast iron bellhousing. Put it together and have some fun with it. Also the actual engine number is on a pad on the right front of the block next to the waterpump. Your pic is of the block casting number which will only narrow the possibilitys down not ID the actual engine. Mike

    Where's the tub?

one piece tierod, don't see a steering box.

don't see any pedals sticking up from frame.

    front driveshaft is missing.

front turn signals/parking lights from before the 1970s.

Probably had to remove the “through the floor” pedals cause they won’t work with the big cast iron bell housing like this one has.
Been there done that, that’s why I’ve got the smaller aluminum bell housing.

i do have the driveshafts there sitting there somewhere in the pic with the pile of parts

Judging from the pictures and size I can surmize of the rocker covers it looks like Chevy 283 with an HEI convert. Best of luck

Somewhere around 1976 to 82 I believe. Chevy had those sparkplug exhaust guards on the SBC. Been cut by them before, 1980 Chevy 4dht. Don't know, but is that a twin stick 18 with the parking brake or a 20? You have a lot of work ahead of you, should be fun. Build it to honor your friend.

    Y^up, late 70's - early 80's small block...

edit> mid- late 70's small block. Probably 4.1 (262) or 305 out of a car, judging by the 2BBL...
