Recently I was hammering away at the choke tube that goes through the pass. side exhaust manifold (V6), and I think I damaged its bond with the maifold itself and now I have a noticeable ex. leak.
What can I use to plug it all up? I read somewhere that 1/2"-13 bolts will help, but I was wondering if a big glob of JB weld or other would suffice. Will JB weld or other sealant hold, or eventually burn up on a hot manifold?

I had a crack in my exhaust manifold on my 69 CJ5 and used JB Weld to seal it. So far so good albeit that I haven't put a lot of running time into it (maybe 4-5 hours only).

I knew someone that used it on his later model CJ5 and has put over 10k miles on it without it giving out.

Alan: Your choke tube is 1/2" in diameter? :?

It will prolly work, but I personally would use "Marine Tex". Available at boat shops. Withstands higher temps.

Welding would be the best bet, but welding cast is iffy for a non pro.......
Disclaimer-- I am a non pro, not trying to be a know it all...

edit----- I have welded cast manifolds with decent luck.....

Alan: I'm Shocked! My Uncle, the boat shop owner, and I have used Marine-Tex since the early '60's. I got out my supply of it and re-read the info. THEY CHANGED THE FORMULA!! Used to be made of powered nodular iron (couldn't be used on compass housings). Now it can be used for that purpose and is non magnetic. I successfully patched a small crack in a cast Chevy ex. manifold in the collector area and it lasted till I sold it.

I really think I would try the JB for your fix. What have you got to loose--it's cheap.:)

I haven't actually tried this stuff, but it's made expressly for this purpose.

I don't think anyone will claim JB Weld to be a long-term solution, but for a temporary solution I think it's worth a try. Like I said - it worked for me and I know others that it's worked for.

I suspect that JB Weld doesn't guarantee it hence their non-recommended stance.

However, if you really have a 1/2" hole, then it's probably not going to work.

You might try this stuff: http://www.permatex.com/auto/autouh.asp?automotive=yes&f_call=get_item&item_no=26346

That Fire-seal sounds good!! I'll have to look around where I can find that locally.

    Lorne: linkey no-werky. :(

Thanks for all the tips guys. My entire exhaust system is crap. For 2+ years it's had that flex-hose stuff, and much of it may be failing. Recently I've had to re-affix various joints in the system, and it still leaks, so I may just bite the bullet and get a complete custom exhaust on 'er. Since I just put the hard-top on the tux, I don't want to worry about fumes in the cabin like they are now. Tired of getting gassed.

Having said that, I'll try some patchy stuff first and letcha know how it werked! :D

I updated the link to the Permatex web site. If you enter your zip code, it will show you where you can buy it locally...

Let me know if it works - I'll probably want to try that stuff when the JB Weld on my cracked manifold fails...
