    Hello guys and gal's,
I'm having a shaking/rattling problem in my 75. It shakes the whole vehicle when I take off. It only happens when I start off in first or reverse. I have put new motor/transmission mounts on and a new stabilizer stud and bushings. Everything's tight, so I am thinking it may be the clutch. The clutch is close to needing replacment, but it doesn't slip yet. There is no vibration when going down the road, only when you start off from a dead stop. It did this even before I replaced all of the drivetrain mounts, so I know that's not it. Any suggestions?

Does oil drip from the bottom of the bellhousing?

Oil on the clutch disk will make it chatter. However, 258s drip a lot from the valve cover, so the oil dripping from the bell may not be coming from inside the bellhousing. I'd expect that a rear main bearing seal leak would get on the clutch eventually - not certain though.

I say new clutch and a resurfaced flywheel. And replace the rear main seal in the engine while your there. From what I understand, once you get oil on a clutch disc it's pretty much toast from then on so you wouldn't want it happening again.

I pulled the motor about 2 months b/c the previous owner had the wrong flywheel in it and it didn't leak at the rear main until we put it back in. The guys helping me were being a little rough with the motor while we were putting it back in, so i'm thinking that we might of screwed up the seal. I almost replaced the clutch when I had it out, but it still had some life in it and I figured I would replace it this spring when I redo the whole underside. I'm used to it now, I was just curious to what was causing it. Thanks for the input.

Yep I Would say it is clutch related.

I am by no means a jeep expert but the 454 in my 70 ss leaks just a little from the rear main seal and she jumps around a little on take off sometimes. Usually worse after it has set for the winter months, and now since I have a jeep I did not drive it much this summer:(

Need Help-I bought my 73 about two months ago and I have been working here and there at my brother in law's shop to get it going. Did not know if motor worked because it had been sitting there for a year and a half. Took out the gas tank clean it and Finally got the v8 304 motor going- ...love the sound of it..the holley carb leaked but replace a seal and she was good to go. Changed 2 drums in front and replaced all wheel cylinders...did not know that to go back while driving you put it in first..weird..anyhow the problem that I have is that it seems that before take off as you are releasing the clutch it kind shakes...like up and down..now its missing some body mounts ..the shocks are shot I think and also needs leaf replacements..so it needs work..the frond fenders have to be made solid again as they are loose...could that be the reason for the pedal for the clutch to shake ? and is it me or is it kind weird to drive a 3 speed ? is it a good transmission? thanks for reading and hope answers come my way thanks.. oh yeah and the frame seems to tilt to the left-cold this also be shock and leaf spring related ?

I think I know what your talking about. I would say pulsing better describes it. Pushing the fork(releasing) farther then necessary, will do this. Simply adjust the rod length . Now the loose mounts causing it, I would say its possible.Get help while under the jeep . LOL:rofl::twisted:
