    Hi guys....I have a CJ5 (I think it's a 69...sn 8305 S 242661). I have a couple questions.

    1) I need a new hood. Where can I get one? How expensive are they?

    2) Did this Jeep orginally have a roll bar? I like the look of the roll bar but I want to keep it original? Or, would your recommend it even if it isn't original?

    3) I saw a 2" lift advertised on Ebay for a CJ5. Know anything about this?

I would post pictures of my Jeep but I don't know how! HELP!

Any large parts are usually best found locally due to shipping cost. Where are you located?

Roll bar is always a good safety feature.

On the lift...are you asking about the actual lift, or price?

Check with the "Forum help & testing" section for help w/ pics. :)

    Hi - re
    1) What's your location? Somebody in your area might have one. Post on the WTB (want to buy) forum here or on other boards. You can buy a new imported hood, but the Jeep sheetmetal is better quality. There are wrecking yards that have Jeep parts too, but we need a location (add it to your profile on the user control panel (UserCP).

    2) Roll bars were dealer installed before 1974 or 1975. You need a roll bar. I'd estimate that about 70-80% of Jeeps left the dealer lot with a roll bar, so I wouldn't worry about originality.

    3) There are several places to get lift kits, not just ebay. Use the search function or ask for opinions.

Moderators - don't we have a sticky for picture posting? I looked quickly and didn't find one.

Yep - location would help. Hoods can usually be found as they're one of few parts of the Jeep that don't rust away...;)

I'll have a spare one down the road a couple months here in W. MI.

hi guys...thanks for your quick responses! I'm located near Three Rivers, MIchigan.....so I'd be especially interested in the extra one you'll have in a few months. The one thats currently on the Jeep has some BIG dents....I think a tree landed on it. Regarding the roll bar...this Jeep has a full fiberglass body that the previous owner put on it. I was looking today...where can you bolt the rollbar? If I bolt into the fiberglass fender, it doesnt seem like it would be very strong. Sorry if my questions are stupid...I don't know much about these old Jeeps! Thanks again

As for the lift....I don't know what I'm looking for. I would like someone to recommend something that would give it a small lift but would look nice. Not too expensive either. . . .

I'll have the hood pictured here:

The PO added a second "tall loop", other than that it's in pretty good shape as the Jeep lived in TX until I got it. I'll have to trade snorkel cut-outs around as I want to keep my "Boyink Door":

I'm swapping an ex-military hood on so I can take advantage of the shovel holder.

I have *no* idea on timeframe however, I have a ton of stuff to do before I get back to the mil hood, and it needs paint (so waiting until warmer weater again, which at this rate will be next week... )

On your rollbar, you might want to check into a "tie into frame" kit, I believe 4WD hardware sells one for their glass body.

On the lift - I've been happy with the Rancho 1", others have had good luck with BDS 2.5". Depends on how high you want to go.

Three Rivers to Hamilton? Isn't that quite a hike?

I'll save your email address, but if you see me posting here (or on my project blog about getting the new hood done feel free to shoot me a reminder..;)

    Mike,

I LIKE your treatment of the snorkel cutout. Do you have a post that gives details? e.g. Where did the lock come from, What are the two thingies inside, etc.

    Hi Tommy -

Of course I have more detail...;)

The "Boyink door" is part of my onboard air installation.

    Mike,

Wow! My hat's off to you for that bit of creative genius. That's another project I have to put on my to do list. One other question: What make, model and size are your tires? Best I've seen that might fit my CJ.

    Carrie,

Sorry for hijacking your thread.

    Not to steal Boyink's thunder...

I also have a early CJ-5 hood available ($20, and I'll in-turn give Boyink $10 of that :) ), and live just West of Grand Rapids, Michigan (work near I-96/US-131). If you don't end up getting his, e-mail me at one_x_one_craig@yahoo.com. I'll have pics within the next couple days. It's pretty clean.

    Thanks,
    Craig

I figured the $10 would be a cheap "payoff", as I I know that I also still owe you for helping me tear down that CJ-7 (along with all the early CJ tech help you have provided). ;) If you keep up the generousity, I'll probably end up owing you help with a full-blown, frame-up restoration. R)

Keep tallying the points...I promise that I'll make good on it someday soon.

The "Boyink door" is both clever and well executed. Although I don't plan to carry a compressor it did point to a means of locking the hood shut.

One might run a throttle/choke type cable to a spring loaded latch front and center of the hood. The hood would retain the classic latches and would-be thieves would be deterred/delayed while trying to figure out they have to open the "Boyink door," pull the handle, and lift the hood while holding the latch open
