I have a 75 CJ5 with a 304 V8, which has the stock exhaust manifolds with the air injection system. Up until today, I was under the impression that 75 and older CJ's didn't use catalytic converters. However, a couple of Jeep books I have mention that 75 CJ's with a V8 utilize a catalytic converter in the exhaust system. Is this true? The EPA sticker under the hood on top of the grille doesn't mention a converter as part of the system, just that there's a smog pump supplying air to the injection tubes on the manifolds. I'm asking because if it does need a converter, I'll need it to pass the state smog inspection. Thanks.

No, not as far as I know. If you look at a '75 Jeep FSM, it has a table that lists the required systems for 49 states and California. I don't have one, but they are available as a reprint.

Great, thanks. I'll have to get myself a FSM - that'd probably answer a lot of my simple questions.

    Pete,
Hi there! When I bought my '75 CJ-5 It had single exhaust that looked factory, but not convertor. I had custom duals put on it with no convertors It went through New Jersey inspection no problem.

The underhood sticker will list all required smog equipment. So if its not on the sticker then it will pass without a cat. Thats of course assuming your sticker is correct for that vehicle/vin number.

My sticker is long gone, as is the trim tag since the P.O. didn't bother to keep either when he put the 'glass body on.
