    Hi
Just removed the transmission brake drum and all the oil flowed out because you have to take the seal holder/flange out to get the drum off, thats fine cos thats the design, but looking at the seal made up of felt and metal washers it's no wonder that there seems to be a slow oil leak at that point, is it because the seal is old or something missing, it seems to me that the only pressure is coming from the rear prop shaft pushing against this bit, now when that moves with the suspension does that not keep less pressure on the seal:? any suggestions most appreciated.

IIRC, there is a regular seal seated where the yoke goes. I believe the felt washer is there for, uh, moral support. Also, I've heard that a slow leak can occur from under the yoke nut. I put some RTV under the yoke washer/nut on mine with apparent success.

Thanks a lot I am assuming that RTV is the equvilant of PTFE tape over here stuff that is used for air hoses etc.

RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanizing. It's a sealer that is about the consistency of bearing grease that at room temperature and exposed to air sets up into a rubber like substance. Your surfaces must be absolutely clean before application, but it works great for sealing purposes. I like putting a little on the shaft splines when I put the yoke/companion flange on to help keep the oil from following the splines out and causing a leak around the nut. I feel the felt rings are a hold over from the leather seal days, to help keep them from drying out by holding oil against them, and to better seal dirt out. I don't use them with the newer neoprene type seals. Make sure the seal surface on the yoke is in good shape or a new seal will do no good. Nickmil.

RTV is silicon sealer; RTV is an acronym for "room temperature vulcanization."

    <edit> Ha! I'm too slow!

RTV: room temperature vulcanizing rubber, comes in a tube like toothpaste and hardens to a flexible silicone rubber.
