Im almost done rebuilding my F head, and after looking at the tech page about the 3 colors the engine originally was, how can I tell the difference?

I would assume, that it being a Utah CJ, the high altitude would be the ticket...

    Any other more diffinitive thaughts?

Black is good, probably what I'll paint mine. But I saw some photos of one painted gray (Howard Eisenhauer's?) and that looked pretty good. Looked like it would be a lot easier to see under the hood, spot leaks, etc.

Yeah, black makes under the hood awfully dark ... even if authentic.

I believe Alpine green was the factory color for high altitudes and non-domestic F-heads.

I was torn between something like grey or blue, but in the end decided to go with black. A light color definitely does brighten up the engine compartment.

I wouldn't leave it primered, flat paint soaks up things too much and stains too easily. Gray is good, but I'd put a tough glossy engine paint over the primer, whatever color you choose. You want something that will come clean when you wash it. Primer would look like sheee-it in short order, IMO.

I went with red with black on the removable parts ( fan, valve cover, etc). Will match the eventual exterior paint scheme. Also were the factory colors on my '71 Camaro I never should have sold:rofl: Black would be original,, but as previously stated has its disadvantages.

Guilty. I did Tonka's using Tremclad.

Not a mistake I'll ever make again.

It's impossible to keep clean, the grunge sinks into the paint & won't come off :(.

Somewheres I've seen a tranny/xfer case that was done using gray Hammertone, (Thad?) looked really, Really good. I'm in the process of rebuilding Tonk's powertrain right now & I've about 99% made up my mind to do the whole thing with POR15 Silver this time.

    It'll be PURRRR-TEEEE :).

My second choice would be CAT yellow, that looks good too-

I think im going to stick with blue/black as the color scheme for the cj was originally anyway.

I would think pink would be appropriate.

I have photos at home of one of the members that painted theres a medium shade of green that looked awesome. Black may be original but I like to be able to see leaks alittle better than that.

Leaks are quite easy to see with black, any oil residue at all gathers dust so it makes a contrasting color.

Blue looked good in the paint store. I like it in the Jeep even more.

Was the original F-Head black glossy or semi-gloss?
