Saw a Kayline tire carrier on e-bay for sale on an old bronco. Was this ever an option on jeeps? It is worth having or would it rip away from the body?

    not an option from Jeep
an accessory sold by Jeep dealers
the rack can handle a stock size tire and wheel
31" and wider wheel might be pushing it
size is restricted due to distance between can mounts
they were used for many, many years on lots of Jeeps
I suppose in time (and thru vibration) body damage can and will occur
seems to be the general opinion anyways

I think this might have been one. Not built very solid. It was on the Jeep when I bought it because they needed to carry extra fuel in the mountains (CO). I threw it out after bring it home to CT.

These are pics of my Kayline carrier, I've owned it since 1978 and its been on 3 differnt CJ's. I removed the jerry can holders last summer as I no longer use them. I have never had any body damage due to this carrier although I must admit I only use my JEEP's for mild offroading. Mike

All the Kaylines I've seen have had the big mounting brackets with large contact area on the body, like Mike's.

Mine must have been a different make - the mounts were just strap steel that went around the corners.

Also strikes me that my issues were likely the tire carrier and the MI winter salt roads working together - if you live where rust isn't an issue then the tire carrier would likely be fine.

You can fix that by adjusting the stop bolts to achieve an overcenter on the release handle. I also run a lock on mine from my days of living in crime central. Mike

    Mike -

That is a SOLID carrier. Nice.

Around CT, I can't go an 1/8 of a mile w/o seeing a gas station. In CO you can drive all day sometimes.

    FYI
I have a complete set of mounting brackets and hardware for a Kayline TCC for CJs, new in box, if someone needs them; just the brackets, not the entire rack
