I've got my ex Iraq CJ-5 at home now.
The VIN number identifies it as a 1978 and originally with 4.2L AMC 258 I6.
The vehicle largely dismantled (chassis with axles and springs with tub place on top !) and engine is missing.
Fuel is VERY dear over here in UK so rather than sourcing another I6 engine I'm going to convert to diesel power.
With car being dismantled can anyone help with giving me a couple of basic I6 engine measurments so I can determine what diesel might fit ?
What I need to know is (a) distance from engine back plate to centre of engine mount and (b) total length of engine from back plate to front pulley.
I don't need exact measurements so rough will do.

    Thanks.

Does it still have the original drivetrain? I would think placement of the tranny would be the starting point. That would give you an idea of the driveline angles and the distance from the tranny to the radiator would come from that. You can only go so far forward or rearward with the driveltrain.
Distance from tranny to radiator while allowing clearance of mechanical fan from radiator will give you a good idea of what length the donor engine can be. The engine has to be set allowing for depth and configuration of engine and oil pan.
    Measure everything twice.

Paul, here's some rough measurements of a typical 258: front to back 34", top to bottom 25", back to center of engine mount 18".
