What is the MOST likely place to start...I believe I would start with the sensor screwed into the head below the thermostat. Connections are OK, so not disconnected. If it is the sensor, where do I find one for a 258 I6 engine?

That sort of thing (sending unit) is almost always available at your FLAPS. Take a look at www.napaonline.com or at www.smpcorp.com

The sending unit is a variable resistor, so try momentarily grounding the wire to see if the gauge moves (a two-man job unless you have a long piece of wire and some clip leads).

I have now gone through THREE temp gauges in my Jeep! The problem I keep having is that if you follow the needle to where it pivots, there is a small loop, and a pin from the other part of the gauge goes in there to move the needle. It seems that this pin keeps either melting or breaking through the loop in the base of the needle, and the needle just stays at full hot all the time. I finally gave up and purchased an aftermarket temp gauge so I don't have to keep ripping apart my dash.
