I just purchased a project Jeep and am planning what to do with it. The tranny has water in it. Should I expect water in the transfer case or are they sealed/separated?

I can't work on it right now, so I'm asking via the forum.

No seal. None of the Borg-Warner 3-speeds have a rear seal. Oil mixes between the transmission and transfer case through the bearing.

We need pictures (of the Jeep).

    Welcome from Boston!

Wonderfull... The "Jeep" is actually a mixmatch of fiberglass, CJ-2A, M38A1 and something else. I posted it here because it has a V6 (also rusty). Note how clean and shiney the outside is compared to the inside.

To appease the moderator, I've included a picture of my first Jeep. I sold it for $175 running.

Timgr is CORRECT !!! I just finished taking a set apart this afternoon.. Someone ( PO ) has either left it sit in the rain to much or at some point tried to drown the poor jeep.. Amazing what a pressure washer can do to a JEEP that is for sale...

As long as I'm wasting electrons, does this adapter look factory? If not, would the input shaft be custom also?

The long input shaft is a stock Jeep Utility Truck and Utility Wagon item. Gives you enough input shaft length so that you can fit an adapter between the GM bell and the T-90. Adapter looks home-made, but that's ok as long as it's strong and well aligned.

Here is a great link when you go to rebuild the tranny. Have fun with the synchro gears and watch the rear bearing when letting it back down. It is relatively simple with some good instructions and wel worth the rebuild. Don't let anybody talk you out of the Dana 18. it is a good transfer case.

I don't think they're rebuildable, but the seller has offered another set so hopefully things will work out. Should I look for any particular vintage when I dig through the pile?

    Hello again,

The seller was nice enough to give me another T90 and transfer case. I also bought an old T10 & Advance Adapters adapter while I was there. It looks rough outside, but rebuildable inside. Anybody ever seen one of these?
