Hello everyone! I just purchased my first CJ5 yesterday R) that needs quite a bit of work to get 'er road worthy. It's missing the entire fuel tank system (the guys I bought it off of has a boat gas tank in the back!). I'm having a hard time finding a fuel filler neck and protector for my '74. Any ideas? Also, where is the best place to purchase a new wire harness (complete)? Thanks for the info and I'm sure I will be asking many, many, many more questions!

    Welcome from Boston!

Prety sure I know what you mean by the fuel filler neck - it's the flange that attaches to the back panel and accepts the gas cap. There's a grommet around it that should be widely available. If you mean the inset for the filler, there isn't any on a '74.

Do you have any harness? There's no factory harness available new as far as I know for a '74. If you have a factory harness, I'd suggest you repair it. If you choose to, you can use an aftermarket universal harness, but that won't match the factory harness.

Timgr, that must be why I can't find one! Does the metal filler take it's place? Any idea where to find one of those? I thought I saw a 'Painless Wiring' body harness for the 74 in the latest 'Jeep Essentials' catalogue for $379. Maybe I was wrong. I will check tonight. Thanks for the info!

The hole in the back panel is round and just large enough to clear the filler neck, with the grommet in between. There's a tab that comes off of the bottom of the filler neck and holds it to the body with two screws. The filler neck end and cap sit proud of the body, not recessed.

Re the wiring harness, I found the "factory upgrade" harness from Painless http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-cj5/wiring-harness.htm but it looks like a universal type. It says "uses the OEM fuse block" but that doesn't make any sense since '74 and earlier only had inline fuses. Also pretty expensive - I expect you'd get pretty much the same thing from Centech or EZ-wiring for less money; Painless is the most expensive option AFAIK.

Can I use any CJ5 fuel filler neck or is it year specific? I've searched for 3 hours on the internet looking for a 1974 CJ5 fuel filler neck and can't find one! I can find one for 78 and up. Thanks!

Not without cutting the body AFAIK. The newer style is set in to a square hole and has a piece that recesses the cap.

Finding parts can be difficult for intermediate (72-75) owners; these years are less well supported by aftermarket or accessory parts than the earlier or later models.

Advertise what you want to buy here or on other Jeep web sites. You can also try some of the big wrecking yards. J&W will probably have it, but they are expensive http://www.jwjeep.com/ There should be Jeep specialty yards in your area - maybe ask in off-topic or the early CJ forum here, sp. where to buy used parts in MI.

What year range will work in my '74? I will start calling a few local junk yards to see what's available. I would imagine, if they have a CJ in the right year range, it should still have the filler. With my luck, it will be a rear driver's side impact vehicle.......I'm picking up the Jeep today, so I will take a few days to inspect the harness and see what condition it's in before I jump to any conclusions. The battery is hooked to a house light switch on the front passanger floor and there is a push button to activate the starter......here we go!

Intermediate, 72-75. Very few changes over that range.

Once you find the neck, the next problem may be finding the fill and vent hoses....

The vent hose seems to be connected to the fill hose via a 'bulkhead' fitting...

Anyone have sources for these??... the one on my project has become pretty hard, not pliable any more...

I thought there was a source for the rubber parts - same place that sells the gas tanks.

Someone with a lathe could make the bulkhead fitting for you. It's not something that wears out, so I'd exepcet you could take one from a wreck.

Otherwise, you could have a muffler shop make the filler pipe bends in steel for you, and conect each end with a piece of straight fuel hose. http://www.goodyearbeltsandhose.com/cars/fuel.html Then weld or solder in a connection for the vent.

I bit the bullet and spent the $50 from J&W. I didn't think that was too bad since a new one is $45 for newer model year fuel fillers. Any ideas on my latest thread 'Yikes, it's a 24 volt system'? Thanks again for all the info.

    Tim,

While were on the subject. My '75 CJ5 has a '76 body transplanted onto the frame (a whole other topic) but the PO used the '75 gas tank and filler. One large neck from the tank and a flush mounted gas cap. Things were pretty rusty and they didn't make it out in one piece. Now I have a "new" filler neck which I think is a later model. It fits into the recessed style set up and it has two "necks" if you will, one for fill and one for vent. I have a tank out of a '79 CJ at my disposal and it appears that it will fit the later model filler. Any ideas? Will the '79 tank fit? I haven't tried it yet. Any other suggestions? TIA.
