Looking over the Jeep the other day I noticed that my battery is slightly bulged out near the top. I don't have the mount overly tightened so I'm not sure what to think, other than it doesn't look right.:?

While I'm not a big fan of NAPA batteries, yours looks fine Joe. As long as it's not smelling like sulfuric acid, or boiling, and your alternater isn't over charging.....

Thanks Patrick. My voltmeter reads a steady 13-15 volts while driving and there is no acid smell. Might use the multimeter on the alternator to double check...

Not the first one I've seen like that. I think it's due to somewhat weak side construction.

The only batteries like that that I've seen are ones that have been frozen. But they generally have to have been discharged to freeze and then they usually won't recharge. This is probably not the case with yours, but I bring it up only because I know the elevation at Avon and guess that you've already had some freezing temps. (He says as he looks outside and sees that the temp in Golden is 25* and snowing)

A bulging battery case is usually caused by one of two extremes, freezing or overheating/overcharging.

Edit: It’s the combination of battery gasses and some type of spark or flame that results in an explosion.

    Cheap battery.

battery can not handle the charge. I used to have an AUTOZONE that leaked acid and bubbled all the time. It started to show the same signs.

Yes, you are hitting early stages of the BOOM.

I switched to a yellow top Optima and never had a problem since.

Hmmm, maybe I'll look at some Optima prices this weekend. Not sure why it would be overcharging now, I've had the same batt. and alternator for 5 years and never have had a problem.
