    Hey guys/gals,

Anyone here ever take apart a Koenig PTO winch? Specifically, I'm trying to figure out how to get the end bracket and drum off. Doesn't look like it has any type of fastner holding it on...could it be pressed on? If it is pressed on, I don't have a shop press but do have a 3 jaw puller...
My winch needs the brake repaired, and I'd like to take it apart, clean it up and fix it. Anyone BTDT?

Nick will know; he has a couple, at least. Somewhere in my original style-digital style finger file, I have a write-up. Mine is froze up; no free spool. Has been for about twenty years. 'spose I should fix that, eh?

I hope someone has the answer for you. I've got one I'd like to take apart too. I also couldn't get the spool to come off. I believe there is a key on the shaft. It's been quite awhile since I had it apart to that point.

Check the photo gallery. I just submitted a copy of the instruction sheet and parts breakdown for some models of Koenig PTO winches.

Wow you still have the brake? Mine was broken off by a loop of cable or something that the PO did. Check out the parts breakdowns. The drum on mine will slide on the shaft about a half of an inch, diagram only shows two keys on the thru shaft no collars that I can see.

The collar is part #127 (thanks Tommy B!). It's got a couple of notches cut in it that the keys fit into. Seems like there should be a thrust washer or somthing on the other side, but mine didn't have one and I don't see one on the diagram. Weird.

I think the reason the drum will not come off the drum shaft is the drum gets water inside it and rusts the shaft. You might have to press the shaft out bushing and all. I have thought about packing the inside of drum with grease to prevent shaft from rusting. There is nothing holding the brake bracket assembly to the drum shaft, the mounting holes locate it.

I have this winch on my rig and don't understand what you guys are calling a "brake". There is a shift collar on the passengers side of the winch that engages the driven shaft with the end of the drum. The collar is engaged or disengaged with a handle that usually gets broken off. There is supposed to be a little spring and shoe assembly that pushes against the drum when the collar is disengaged to keep the drum from free spooling. I fabricated a new lever to operate the engagement collar and a spring loaded roller to maintain tension on the drum when the collar is disengaged to replace the original drum "brake". I posted pics you can probably find with a search.

If you are talking about the end frame where the clutch and brake mechanism is at it should slide right off. If not probably rust, burrs, etc. on the shaft keeping it from coming off. I've had to clean up the end of the shaft to get the end frame off in the past then polish up the shaft to get the clutch and drum off. Almost every one I've taken apart has been like this.
