I'm completely new to this "Jeep Thing" and I have a lot of questions. My son and I purchased a basket case 1964 CJ5 with a 4 cylinder engine. The body is completely shot and we're ging to attempt a total restoration. We've already done a lot of the disassembly, and are about to start on rebuilding every everything from the ground up.

The engine that is in the Jeep actually started and ran well enough for us to get the Jeep up on our trailer after putting in a used battery and pouring a little gas in to the carb (it had sat undriven for many years (10+) in a farmers field for many years).

Before we go down the road of rebuiling the 4 Cylinder engine, we thought we'd explore the option of getting a used Buick V6 Dauntless engine , rebuild it and use that instead. We would prefer more power that the V6 would provide, but I have several questions about the practicality of the swap. If anyone would give me some answers regarding the following questions, I'd really appreciate it:

    1. If we go with the V6, will the engine mounts use the same mounting points currently on the frame?

    2. Would we have to get a new fan shroud and radiator in order to accomodate the larger engine size? Are there any other space issues within the engine compartment that we would have to alter / modify?

    3. Woukd we need to get any adapters for mating the engine to the tranny / running gear?

If anyone who has performed this swap would be willing to share their wisdom with us, we'd really appreciate it if you'd impart some of your knowledge on a couple of newbies.

    Thanks,

    Ranger

Unfortunately, the V6 being an optional engine for the CJ-5 doesn't mean that the V6 engine will just bolt in. The Buick V6 was chosen by Jeep becasue it fits in the engine compartment easily, but there's still a lot that has to be changed. Novak has a good article: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/cj5_55-71_swap.htm

Lots of good info on the Novak site. Go to the 'knowledge base' and review the engines, T-90 transmission and Dana 18 transfer case pages specifically.

Thanks to everyone that responded. You've given me some good information and I appreciate it. Now all I have to do is figure out whether my son and I are capable of pulling this off, or if we should just stick with the stock 4 cylinder.

    Thanks again,

    Ranger

It's a lot of work but turns the Jeep into a very hiway drivable rig. I was ready to sell mine until doing this swap.

I've done this swap on a cj3b and am about to do it again in a 57 cj6. This time I have a doner 66 cj5 with a v6 so I'll use stock motor mounts etc. I'd also consider a 4 speed, nows the timne to do it! These swaps are well worth it! if you want any mesurments or more info PM me. I'm up near reading pa I think your only about 2hrs away.

I too was in your situation. If you live near hills and have impatient drivers skip the idea of using the 4 cyl. I had a very low mile jeep so I kept the T90, needed input shaft change/bellhousing adapter to make it work, instead of swapping to the T14.The T14 isn't much stronger but has syncho first. Since the transfercase was still good it made finding an overdrive easier. You save almost 90 lbs in weight and get 2x the HP and torque. The 4 speed makes for a very short driveshaft but if offroad is a regular event it should be considered. Unless offroad you will never use first w/ the 4 speed. In fact unless I'm faceing up a hill I leave the overdrive engaged and start in first w/ my three speed T90. Go with bigger tires to bring the RPM's down further too. I have picture of the drivetrain in the frame if you want.
