Waukesha Diesel engine?

    Anyone ever retrofit a Waukesha Diesel into a Kaiser CJ-5? I have one sitting here that came off a industrial application. It looks like it would fit quite nicely, adapting it to the transmission might be a challenge, the flywheelhousing is SAE#4, but I think that could be pulled off and a adapter plate made to fit the jeep bellhousing. Next issue would be the flywheel I guess.
    I've never run a Waukesha, I know they were commonly used in Oliver tractors.
    Specs on the engine are:

    144ci, 3.5" bore x 3.75" stroke, 17.10:1 compression, 45HP @2400 RPM, 102 ftlbQ @ 1800 RPM.
    Not big numbers, but It looks like the pump is tuneable (Bosch), and diesels build power down low anyway.

    Motor weight might be of a concern. Looks very heavy.

    :iagree: Also even if you add ~50% more power you will be just reaching the power of the F-head.

    So the F-head puts out 90HP? Not to bad!
    The Motors Repair manual I got the numbers from listd the diesel as a 45HP@2400RPM & 102Q@1800RPM motor, I'm sure that's measured @ the flywheel.
    Of course the same book lists the F-head in the CJ-5 at 70HP @4000 RPM, and 114Q @ 2000 RPM, so who knows where they get thier numbers. Probably from the manufacturer.

    The weight would be a factor I'm sure. Probably need a 2.5" lift in the front to make it level with stock springs in the rear! LOL!!!!

    i am with andy, he likes the truck and i need the motor,have the I.R. air compressor that bolts to that motor,been kicking the notion of putting my spare f-head to it :p

    diesels only rev to what? 4k rpm. I think it would be much more $ and trouble than its worth.

    I cant speak of the perkins engines, but I have a few Cummins 4BT's sitting around. They are the 105 HP version, but they are a bit too big and heavy for the Jeep IMHO. And the vibration under 1200 rpm is horrendous. If I were looking for a more modern diesel in a higher HP, I think I would be looking at a Cummins 6AT 3.4L engine. You can find them with a SM465 installed. They are silky smooth, and not much bigger than a 258ci jeep engine.
    The only 2 things I dont like about the 6AT is parts availabilty is drying up, and it has a rotary pump that limits tuneability a bit.

    Not meant to hijack, but while we are thinking of adding a diesel...what about the little volkswagon diesls that the put in the bugs? Anyone know anything about those?

    Not meant to hijack, but while we are thinking of putting a diesel in, what about the little diesels they put in the VW bugs? Any one know anything about those?
    I am going to have to fire this secretary...can't spell and not much to look at!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The VW TDI engines are becoming popular for swapping into Toyota 4x4's. I've been wondering about the feasability of dropping one in a CJ too, but haven't had the time to do serious research.
