D44 and a D27. Owner say's he installed aftermarket 5.38's gears in both about 500 miles ago. They are out of a 66. He wants $100 for the pair. This sound too good to be true?

Any advice on my potential purchase would be greatly appreciated. I kinda had my mind set on a D30 but man, 5.38's frnt and rear... :p

Open them - see if he will let you run a pattern test on them to see if they are tracking true. Check the teeth and that for wiggle and shape. Worst case is $300 / axle to set them upagain at a shop.

I really can't see a downside to getting them if you know they work. They're ridiculously cheap. There may be some issues that need to be worked out but they're cheap enough you can have some money left over to do that.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The owner say's he's taking a big loss but he just wants them out of the garage.
But for a measley 100 bucks, they can sit in my garage.:D

Pattern test - you mark the ring gear, turn the pinion and see the pattern in the mark to see if the axle is set OK. That and the back lash is the important pieces to an axle setup.
