Rear differential Loose. "Clang"?

    69 Commando. Auto trans. Rear diff clangs when I put it in gear. Seems to have alot of play. Any adjustments or shims? Thanks Ralph

    Any vibrations going down the road? Might check your u-joints.....

    Do you have a locking differential of some kind? Could be an issue with that, or with u-joints as stated above. There's a lot of info on the stock and non-stock lockers and limited slips if you do some searching on this site.

    As stated above, remove your driveshaft and check the universal joints first. And if they are good. Then you can turn in the differential gears by hand and get a feel for what's going on inside your rear end

    Check the easy stuff first, like the u-joints.

    If there is a lot of backlash or "play" when you rotate the drive shaft by hand, you may have some worn spider & side gears in the differential. Generally speaking, these will wear out long before the ring & pinion will, and they are LOTS easier to replace too. I was all set to rebuild the rear in my flattie until I decided to install a lock-right for a trip to Windrock last year. Guess what? Almost all of the "slop" is gone, and my Jeep is only 59 years old!
