Ok I am having problems with my m38.

    Engine is rebuilt
    Fuel Pump is Rebuilt
    Carb is Rebuilt
    Rebuilt dist
    New Plug wires

    Here is the problem

Starts a little hard but that seems to be getting better. Engine idles well. Well take throttle well off Idle. Goes well in 1st gear up to about 10mph, shift into 2nd and it just looses all power. No backfires.

Did die once on me, wouldnt restart right off, sat a few minutes and them fired up again.

    Anybody have any ideas?

Double and triple check all timing/dwell/points settings? Sure you don't have anything binding in the driveline, like a brake dragging or the park brake? No bearings in a bind in the tranny or t/case?

IMHO, check the fuel pump. Sounds like when you accelerate over a certain
speed it cuts out. Also check the carb.

Agree with above. I think you're running out of fuel for some reason. Fuel starvation that is. look for a restriction somewhere. in the tank, or elsewhere. also make sure the pump in pumping sufficient amounts of fuel to the carb.

Right now I am leaning towards my carb. I did play with the timming a little bit and that helped.

tested my fuel pump and she is producing just over 4.5 lbs, which is correct. My brother does have an old carb off an F-head that worked great on the motor is was on. I am have tempted to see if I can bolt it on

Maybe the exhaust is plugged up? Might not be noticeable at low speeds.

    Exhuast is new just installed.

It stalled out on me again, started back up after a little cranking, got back the the garage stalled again, went to remove fuel line to carb and no fuel came out. I am starting to think my pump is not working the best after all.

Before blaming the pump check for blockage from the tank to the pump. Could be some junk floating around blocking the line off. Also check any filter's that may be installed in line. Nickmil

You will not be able to use the carb off an F-Head. Sounds like what everyone is saying, you're having fuel delivery problems. You might also try an electronic fuel pump, unless you want to keep it to original parts.

AutoZone sells fuel pumps for $19.95. I would install a new fuel Pump and a glass fuel filter before the fuel Pump and hide it up inside the frame

Not the pumps fault, changed to another pump, went for a ride, stalled out would not restart, disconnect fuel line not really pumping, put mroe gass in the tank and starts right up. Pull pick up out of tank, tank is a mess. Tank is now out getting cleaned and coated, same with pickup need to buy a new sending unit.

I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be that my gas cap wasn't venting - so the fuel pump would pull until the vaccum it created was greater than it could pull against.

When it died you could pop the gas cap and hear the tank sucking air in.

I am having a similar issue with lack of power on my m38 a1, but it does not appear to be fuel. When I accelerate through first gear, I have no problem, but in second and third, I have to pace how quickly I press down the fuel peddle, or it feels like I am going to flood the engine. I have tried adjusting timing back and forth, but it does not seem to make a difference, I just get slow acceleration. New dist kit installed, new carb, new fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, new spark plugs, compression consistent accross all cylinders. any ideas?

Tank is new and pickup is new, turns out, my timing was way too forward. I have a timing light, but the timing marker is missing from my engine. Now I need to figure out where I need to line up the mark on the wheel.
