So maybe this has been asked before, and I tried searching the forums, but how can I tell if my 1979 CJ5 was originally a Renegade? I've heard that there is no way to tell from your vin. I don't know how many owners there were before me, but it was repainted more than 10 years ago in the original Cumberland Green. It has all original numbers-matching 304 V8, T-150, and Dana 20. It has a fixed tailgate, it had the original black plastic dash overlay, but no tach or clock (even though I just installed some reproductions last night). How do I know if this was originally a Renegade? Are there any factory options that were only available on the Renegade package in 1979? Thanks for any help!:)

Yes, we have gone over this many times before.

The only sure way to tell after 1972 is by the original paint and stripes. Even then, the stripes and wheels were available over the parts counter, so anyone could add them. The colors were unique through 1974 (?) but after that, you could get a Renegade of any color as I understand it.

I'd advise you not to obsess about it. After 1972, the Renegade package was just an appearance group anyway - you could get all the pieces of the package in the regular options list. If you want it to be a Renegade, add the stripes and wheels and you're there.
