I'm looking at installing a Dana 70 under the rear of my '74 CJ-5.
anyone have a pic of one underneath an intermediate? Like a backhoe version or ditch digger model? Did they still make those in these years?
I'm not worried about width, or ground clearance issues yet, just whether or not it will clear the fuel tank.
I have a 4" suspension lift (SUA), 2" shackle lift, and front shackle reversal. Running 35" Swampers.

dont have what you are asking for....and i'm not sure if you are going with a 70 for authenticity, or for more beef.

so this is just food for thought....

but arent the 60's actually strong than the 70?

I heard that with the reduced tooth/spline count the 70s (as found in the M715 trucks) were weaker than a modern D60 with higher splines.

then also consider the aftermarket availability of parts.

anywho, from the avatar pic you have, it looks like you use your jeep for the trail...so a 60 would be a better choice if thats what you need.

If you want a 70, why not a GM 11 bolt? I think a dually axle may already be narrow enough...

Wasn't there a guy a while back that put one under a mid year? Might do a search. There were pics also as I remember....

EEWW...GM parts in my Jeep?? No Way! R) Sorry, I'm a certified Ford Fanatic! And I happen to have a dually C&C model Dana 70 rear axle sitting here already. (and the 2 Dana 60's I have, one is going under the wife's project Scout II, and the other is a semi-floater. Both too wide for what I have in mind without narrowing, and all that entails)

I guess the question bears some history. Read on if you care...
When I spun the rear driveshaft last week, I thought that was all the damage done. I later found the spider gears in the dana 44 are now void of a few teeth. Since I have a predilection for Hi-RPM launches at the Mud Bogs, I need more beef. But I'm not ready to go full-width axles yet (cross-country move possible in the near future).
I don't use this one on the trails much (my avatar pic is the only trail running I've had it on...) so ground clearance isn't as critical to me as a rock crawler.
So with the axles I have available to me, I think the best fit should be the Dana 70. If it clears the fuel tank enough.
As for the strength question, the pinion is the same diameter as the dana 60's, thats why they aren't considered total beef. Not a big deal to me. Also this one is from a 1970 F-350 C&C (11" narrower than a full dually pick-up axle), so its not an early style. Been running it in my '72 4x4 for 3 years with no problems. (I also think it might be a 35 spline, but I've never opened it up to see...)

:? I've heard of 10-bolt, 12-bolt and 14-bolt... What would this have been found in? Just wondering since I'm not familiar with GM axles.

Uh, I've been up all night working ... maybe it's 14 bolt? :coffee:

Or, as they say in the physics lab - "11, 14 ... same order of magnitude."

The gm 14 bolt was available with a 9.5" (Semi float), 10.5" (FF) or 11.5"(FF, rare heavy duty) ring gear. There's an 11 in there somewhere-So I'll let you off the hook.

Same order of magnitude? Must be nice in the physics lab, we can't get away with that stuff here in the chem labs!
