I am working on a 1966 CJ-5. I have the Hampstead green for the engine. My question is what color are the tranny and t-case and bellhousing. When I cleaned them up I could not tell what color they had been. Motor color or black? Is the bellhousing left un-painted?
    Thanks
    Ryan

The bell housing is unpainted. The trans/TC were probably black but I'm not sure it was paint. Mine looked like some kind of undercoating (where there was any). I painted mine black and am second thinking that decision now. I've seen a lot of trannys painted or PCed w/ a silver/gray color that looks good and would allow easy tracking of leaks.:v6:

My 73 has unpainted t-case, tranny, and bellhousing. The clean castings were well preserved under thick undercoating so I'm pretty sure the paint didn't rust away.

    Thanks,

I am thinking of going with the same color as the engine.

    Not sure yet.

I just got my block painted last weekend, I did it in a grey, pulling the trans,t-case today, was planning on doing them in the same gray to help track leaks and all. got pics of the motor updated on my signature link.

did you use any solvents to help strip the paint off the body?

I recall that my '73 D20 was black... I recall that because I thought the factory shim pack was sealed at the edges with factory paint.

The service parts were unpainted, IIRC. So, I think either bare cast iron or black would be "factory" color. Usually undercarriages are painted black so that they 'disappear' next to the brightly painted body. Especially parts that hang down become very apparent if painted a lighter color. Painting the components a lighter color will make them easier to work on, though oil drips will show a lot more.

The aluminum bell was definitely unpainted.
