I have a '74 CJ5 with low back seats. I am wanting to put in 3pt. shoulder harnesses for safety. My question is, with lowback seats, is having a 3pt. shoulder harness dangerous due to the height of the seats (or lack there of)? If so, can anyone point me in the direction of easy bolt in highback seats for my CJ5? May be hard to find due to the extra cross bar in my roll bar that is somehow there. Pics of the Jeep can be seen below:

How many trucks have bench seats (Blazer & vans for buckets) and 3pt seatbelts, so I don't see a problem with that.

Now the problem is mounting them, I'd look at a newer style CJ. I personally don't care for the way they are mounted both off the body and cage. I prefer off the body totally or off the cage totally but a combination can be done just make sure the bar is well mounted.

As for high back, not sure much will bolt into that year of Jeep, check the mags but your probably in the 250 range per seat if you can find something. Later model Jeeps (CJs & Wranglers) came with highback seats, might see if you can find someone changing them out. If you don't mind the hard plastic seats, they can be easily adapted to to the seat brackets. These seats can be had for about $80 a piece with seat covers, summit, jegs, or any supplier like that. I did have problems getting a set of these seats mounted low enough but also had a fuel tank to deal with.

AFAIK the high backs are used now to prevent whiplash injury from a collision to the rear, and not connected to the belt design. For example, my '77 pickup has factory 3-point belts and no head rests.

What was said is true, you don't need head rests with belts, head restraints are desireable and could (by the looks of it) be easily fab'd on the back bar! IMHO

I too have TJ seatbelts in my CJ. They work well, and at times to well. They will lock when in an off camber position or angle on thetrail. Gets real annoying. I tend to take the shoulder portion and put it behind me and only use the lap belts. for the road i feel real good with the 3 point belts. Excellent mod, i have them in the back for the kids :)
