I barely got my Cj5 1973 AMC V8 and it also came with a AMC Hardtop ( or at least that is what I think it is ) and so does anyone know about how much I can get for this top (perfect condition) with doors and all.. not trying to sell it just want to know the value of it...and by the way you fall for the CJ5 right away. I have a YJ and think I allready forgot about it as the CJ5 demands lots of attention-restoring wise attention...does anybody get that also ??

I'm not aware that AMC sold hard tops on CJ-5s during their production as a factory item.

Tim or Jim can probably jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong on that.

The pic in your avatar looks like an Acme hard-top to me.

    Those are quite desirable.

Price is gonna depend on your area, etc. Best advice is check E-bay and see what they go for in your area before selling. Or just put it on E-bay. $400 - $600, maybe more????

Probably worth a whole lot less in LA than it is up here in the frozen north.

Yeah maybe I will have a trial run in Ebay to see what people are willing to pay.. I would not part with it but considering it so I can put that $$ back into the Restoration.. but only if I get a good chunk of it but not for $600.. thanks
are they pretty hard to find though ??

Yes, fiberglass Acme tops that fit late CJ5s are rare, ones that fit Early/Intermediate 5s are even more so I'd say.

Sure, you could get a factory hard top (a Meyer steel cab though, not an Acme). You can tell a factory top by the lack of catches on the windshield - plates were used instead. Should also be refected in the VIN, but I've never verified that.

Yeah, I'd think that $400-600 would be a good price - any more than that would be unrealistic. Just not that much demand at your location, even for the desirable Acme top, and shipping to the frozen north (where it would be most sought after) will be expensive.

Thanks Tim- I have decided than that I will keep it than.. as $ 600 is not much.. plus the top is in perfect condition ....and it looks good at least in the rain.. btu what makes this such a desirable top? is it the fit? or the lack of them ??

Lack of doesn't make for desirability IMO. Just means they're hard to find so they cost more.

I like 'em because they're fiberglass, not metal, the doors are full view, etc.

In my imagination, they are lighter than the Meyer steel cabs - maybe not the panels, but lift one of the Meyer doors ... ooof! I'd think the fiberglass would rattle less, be slightly more aerodynamic, and insulate a little better. In 1976 Jeep went to a fiberglass top for the CJ-7, so maybe that means they are an improvement over the steel cabs.

I'd echo what Tim said above.

As for my Jeep, it's fiberglass, it pretty much looked like it does now when I got it. Though I've put different wheels/tires on it and changed the front bumper and have a hard top like yours that needs some repair to put on it.

I think the fiberglass tops are a lot quieter than the metal ones. The metal ones echo the noise and the fiberglass absorbs some of the noise. I also think the fiberglass ones fit better.

I would really like to have a nice fiberglass top for my 74. I don't think I would pay much more than $500-$600 for one that was in good shape. Shipping from your location to me would probably eat most of that cost.

A very nice new bestop isn't much more than $600? They are much more convenient than the hard top. Hard to compete with that trying to sell a used hard top.

The big advantage I would see here would be in the snow. We get storms that will drop 4' of snow in a couple days. The weight of that is really hard on a soft top.

But you can also easily find a new Supertop, fiberglass hard tops for CJ-5s are rare as noted above which tends to inflate the prices. I don't think you are "competing", buyers wanting a hard top usually want just that and buyers wanting a soft top usually want just that...

With Black jeep I am just happy to have a top at all. :) The whole time my son drove it there wasn't a top except the bikini. If I had to make a choice between a used hard top or a new soft top I think I would go for the new soft top if they were both the same price. I dunno, maybe not. That fiberglass top is pretty nice.

I don't think it is a choice between the two. I think most folks will just want the soft top.

Those that want the hard top will likely pay more for it since there are so few is what I was saying. I'm not that everyone should want one just because it's similarly priced to the new soft top. I am saying that they command a fairly high price because there are so few and those that want them are usually willing to pay to get them.

    Case in point: http://manoian.net/jeep/acme_hardtop.html
