    Hi,
I am trying to restore the gas tank on my 1961 CJ5 back to how it was originally installed.
It currently has an aluminum tank up against the back of the tub inside the cab. The tank is in bad shape as far as all kinds of gunky black stuff which is making the gas go bad really quick. That is how it was when I bought it. I have been looking for pics of what it is supposed to look like from factory but cannot seem to find any. I basically need to see how the tank sits and how both fron seats are in place.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

PS: This CJ5 has a double walled fiberglass tub with no indentations for the filler neck.

Stock tank measures 24 inches (left to right) by 18 1/8 inches (front to rear) by 6 1/16 inches (top to bottom). It sits tight up against the step behind the drivers and passenger seats, and right up to the drivers side panel. on the passenger side of it, it is formed to fit the transmission hump. There is a strap that goes front to rear about half way from the left to right to hold it down. The fuel line outlet is towards the rear and towards the passenger side on the bottom. Mine also has a drain plug an inch or so more to the rear. Holds 10.5 gallons according to the books. the gas gauge hookups are in the center of the top of the tank.

The drivers seat mount is a bar that is bolted to the top of the door frame on the outside and runs over the tank almost to the toolbox under the passenger seat where it bolts to the transmission hump. two straps that are about 1/4 inch thick run back from it to the step behind the tank and make a U-shaped bend back toward the front. The bolts are in the end of the U and the step behind the tank. the bar in the front clears the tank by 4 or 5 inches.

Your frame rail should run about center of the tank left to right. Fuel pickup and drain are inside the frame. There is also a thick rubber pad under the tank for cushioning.

My camera isn't working or I'ld take pictures of all this stuff for you. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help. Now I have to decide which way should I go (the stock under the seat or the mod version).

If your tub has no provision for the filler neck, I think an under-seat tank is going to be pretty challenging to install. I kept the underseat tank, but installed a 15 gal tank under the rear floorboards.

Yea there is nothing on the tub that tells me where it would be located.

To install a rear tank people usually cut out the V shaped brace that goes to the drawbar mount. I bought a tank from 4WD Hardware. If I were to do it again, I'd buy The polyurethane tank. To make it easy, buy the filler hose and filler at the same time. You should be able to mount the tank with some all-thread. I made a skidplate out of some 1/8" diamond plate steel and ran the all-thread through it and the mount holes on the tank.
