This came up also when I bought my 74 CJ6. The windshield frame on mine was painted the factory US Forest Service green that was on the rest of the body.

I wonder if they could've been ordered with paint matched w/s frames. I know with the Forest Service when they bought fleets of vehicles the paint was specific to the forest service, at least here. I have 3 different intermediate windshields and all of them are black under the cowl seal.... Nickmil

To the best of our knowledge, and based on photos we've looked at, the 72-73 models were black from the factory. The photos of 74-75 models I have, all show the frames being the same as the body color.

Fleet purchased vehicles could be painted differently, by whatever the purchase order stated.

I recall CJs being shipped with windshields in the down position, to prevent glass breakage; if the strap came loose, the frame/hood could be damaged in transit. At our dealership, the repaired/replaced components would have been repainted the same as factory color, either black if black, or body color if body color.

Regarding the comment about damaged new vehicles; In Calif., if the damage is over $500, the repairs must be disclosed prior to purchase; this includes bad engines, transmissions, etc. The vehicle is still a new vehicle, as it has not been sold or registered.

If damages were excessive, the dealer could decline acceptance of the vehicle.

Had a 75. Same red color.

Has anyone seen a factory black windshield on a 74 or 75 without the whole vehicle being black?

Well, it looks like we may have found one more thing that makes the 74-75 Jeeps the oddball little orphans they are. I love this stuff...

Coming to this a little late, but yes, body color by 1975. Not sure about the '74s, but I don't doubt that they were body color. Here's my '75 with original paint:

The '75 I bought new off the dealer's lot was body color too.
