Any help would be appreciated. I just bought a new steel gas tank for my 72' CJ5. The new one is different than the old one. The old one has a total of 5 lines coming into it (one on each corner) and the new has only four (two at one end and two on the top). The company that sold me the tank said that the tank is the only one for that year. Could this be the right tank and I am supposed to connect it a different way or do I have the wrong tank?

I'm not sure about your description of the new tank, but I'm pretty sure the only difference is that the corner vents are internal to the later tank. The later tank should work if you tee together all the lines that come from your expansion tank into the single vent line. IIRC the '71-72 is the only tank with the corner vents external to the tank. I doubt you're going to be able to get a tank that matches the original exactly; instead it will have the later design with internal vent lines.

    Pictures would help.

    Welcome from Boston!

Thanks for your help. I will try to get some pics. I have never messed with the tank before so I am trying to figure this out.

On my 72 I had to "custom fit" it a little bit to fit, but it wasn't too big a deal. Its a tight squeeze to begin with though. All of my venting is hooked up to the top vent tube, I capped the side vents with a piece of fuel line bent in a "U".

I see what you are saying. Now did you just use one vent tube or did you tie all 5 vent tubes to the one outlet on top of the tank?

Do you have the factory manual? There's a good picture of the tank vents IIRC. ... yes - look at section 4, figure 2. http://www.c104.net/manual/ You can cap or tee some of the inlets to the expansion tank. You need to retain vent(s) to the expansion tank, filler vent, and filler hose. The tank level sending unit has two connections, the pickup and return (not used in '72 according to the manual picture).
