Hey guys my CJ with the 304 v8, automatic, was running the other day and when I went to move it into the driveway it just wouldnt start, so I had to push it. Ive replaced the selenoid, ignition module and the coil as well as some nasty battery and starter cable's but still no luck. Any suggestions.

First let's figure out if battery, starter and heavy cables are OK. Put in neutral with parking brake and use a screwdriver to jumper across the starter solenoid (heavy wires). If that works then your starter, battery, and battery cables are OK.

Next step is to see if your starter switch is putting juice to the solenoid. Use allegator clips to apply 12V from battery to the small wire on the solenoid. If that works then your ignition switch is bad. If it doesn't work then your solenoid is either bad or not grounded. I think the solenoid grounds through the mounting screw. Allegator clip the metal part of solenoid to a good ground, such as alternator bracket or frame. See if that works. If so clean up your solenoid mounting hardware and the mounting ears.

All of this can be more safely verified with voltmeter but since you're asking for help with this I'm guessing you aren't all uppity with the 'leckety stuff and might not be familiar with how to use voltmeter correctly.

When you say it won't start, does that mean it won't run or it won't crank? You've replaced a few parts that could be related to either of those problems, but not necessarily both.

If it will crank but won't run, do you have spark and fuel?

If it will run (when you push it) but won't crank, follow Chilly's instructions.

Well thanks for the info guys, it looks as if Im going to have to replace the wiring harness. There were too many "Bubba" modifications to it and the wires themselves looked as if it was gonna start a fire any day.

All modifications aside, I've seen this problem with vehicles in the past. If she was running and now won't, I would start by following the electricity from the battery on both cables to all the systems, then the sub wiring. Chances are more likely you just have some screw or bolt somewhere that isn't tightened down and not making a connection. If you get power and no crank, more than likey it's in your ignition system....just a thought before you have to tear it all apart. I've found, especially talking to the guys on this site, that usually the simplest solution works. :) Happy Hunting!
