Hey everyone just found out that my 67 cj5 has a t-150 tranny which came from around a 76 - 79 cj is this a good tranny. My first gear went out so I have baught the parts to rebuild it. But, I was wondering if it is a good tranny.....Thanks :v6:

The T-150 is supposed to be pretty tough. Pretty simple to fix. If you want something stronger, you'd probably have to go to something like a T-18 4 speed.

It's a good transmission. Reputed to be stronger than the T-14 that came with the V6. Only works with the Dana 20 though, so if you have a Dana 18 you don't have a T-150.

We'll that is what I thaught, but that what I thaught, but unless they made a dana 20 with the front and rear side shaft's this one I have is a dana 18. Thanks for the information. I have check the number's on the case and they match what I have ordered...:?

The deal is - there's only one output gear for the T-150 and it works with the Dana 20. The T-150 has a seal between the trans and TC and its bull gear has a shoulder for the seal. Can you fit the D18 bull gear and not use the seal? I don't know. Sharing oil is likely not a problem - the 3-speed B-W transmissions do. Unless the oil level for the Ford transmission (T-150) is very different, I'd think it would be ok.

I guess you'll find out - let us know what you find. :coffee:

Yeah, you can remove the seal and use a Dana 18 bull gear. I'm not sure if the oil level would be an issue. The other option is keep the seal and have the 18 bull gear (input gear) machined for the seal....

The topic of oil level could be an issue. I had a 76 CJ-5 with T-150 and there was a factory recall to change the seal because transfer cases were overfilling and tranny's were going dry. As you say, perhaps the D18 bull gear could be machined for a sealing surface.

Would Herm know? Isn't the bull gear the one changed to fit the overdrive to the D18?

Hey Joe, its the same tranny I have in mine, and i have abused the heck out of the last year or so, with all the racing I've been doing. Never had a hiccup out of the tranny, although the broken front axle, shattered rear spider gears and the twisted driveshaft over that same year must mean I abuse it just enough...;)
