I have a 66 cj5 with the stock dana 44 two piece axle in the rear. Ive been told that the 2 piece axle is not the greatest. So i was wondering what would be a better axle for the rear instead of the 2 piece and maybe a rough estimate on how much it would cost?

The two piece axles hold up quite well up to about 33" tires and mild hp if you keep the axle nuts torqued. Where did you hear this? LOTS of hearsay about the tapered axles usually from people who knew someone who knew someone who had problem. If running a V-8 and 36" tires, then I'd say yes, you're in for trouble. If running 33" tires or smaller and V-6 or smaller, then you would most likely be fine as long as not trying to do burnouts on pavement.

Have you tried the search function? LOTS of posts about this very subject....

I hear they will even hold up to that...Even barking the tires going into 2nd....
    So I hear....

Right after I first put the mildly built 231 in the '59 I was doing second gear wheelies on the pavement on a bet (5.38's, Wide ratio Saginaw 4 speed, too many beers). Sent the spider and side gears through the rear diff cover. 19 spline tapered axles survived fine....
