I read that the early CJ's were made up to '71, but I spoke with a guy at Rough Country and he told me that the lifts for a '63 and a '71 are not compatable. He said that the springs are different lengths and widths. I am trying to buy some parts and I want to know if they will fit on my Jeep.

There is a U-bolt or axle housing difference sometime around '68. If you look at some of the kits, they specify 55-67 and a second kit for 68-71. But it looks like you can make it work.

The rear axle tube got bigger at some point, but '68 should still be the smaller. I put a '68 housing in the rear of mine, and it was the same.

Yeah, we've had plenty of discussions about U-bolts that come with the kits. Several aren't right, you can buy the correct size at NAPA and other places.

So you might try a search for "axle u-bolts" or some variation thereof here in the forum.

I squeezed mine together in the vise to get through my A1's shock mounts, and that's good enough for me. 69-71 must be the lift break point.

Springs are the same but the U-bolts are different. The offset flanged axle had 2 3/4" tubes whereas the earlier tapered axle rear had 2 1/2" tubes so the u-bolts were different.
