Does anybody still make "original" fender flares? Way back when (1970s) my Jeep had molded rubber fender flares. The only replacements that I've been able to find are a thinner, more rigid plastic. I damaged a couple this weekend, thought it would be a good excuse to purchase the original type if available.

    Thanks

Nope...the rubber flares I had were a lot thicker than the commodity ones. The ones I had on my jeep before were a lot heavier, molded and shaped specifically to fit the Jeep. I would have sworn that they were factory originals. I purchased them 19?? to from a salvage yard to replace some commodity type that had previously been installed.

It would be interesting to see a picture of these flares. Back in the day, the only type of flares installed were the thick rubber type, which came in a roll, and the molded flexible plastic flares. The roll flares were identical to flares sold for truck trailers - the dealership sourced them from a third party seller, and they were exactly the same as what Jeep supplied.

The modern commodity flare may be different from what was supplied in the day. The flares that came on some of the early packages ('72 Ren and SuperJeep?? think so) were thick rubber, like you describe... but they were cut to length and trimmed for the application.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

the factory versions were very sturdy and molded as described.
they were sold in a set of 4 in the mid 70s and 80s.
much better than the flim flam flimsy roll stufff (in my opinion)

edit: you could also buy them seperately as well, in case you destroyed one.
The fronts had the indent/cutout for the marker lens in the front fenders.

After seeing the pics from cj5/442 and timgr's explanation, that seems to be correct....these look like what I had, but since they had been trimed (especially around the side marker lights) and the ones I had were used, therefore maintaining the shape of the fenders, I thought they were molded to fit.

    Learn something new every day!

    Thanks guys!

Okay guys....take a look at the pictures. These are heavy thick rubber flares but if you look closely, they sure look as though they are made to fit the Jeep, not trim to fit. Any ideas?

The flares in the pic are the original...or aftermarket. They are clearly molded to fit. Aside from salvage yards, I'm not sure where you can get the OEM flares.

Yep. $41.00 (each) They feel like a cross between plastic and rubber (if that makes any sense), like a "Heavy Rubber".
