starter grinding?

    The starter on the '63 engages fine then screeches and free spins. I have to push the Jeep ahead againe with it in gear to spin the fly wheel and then it may engage again properly. Do I need a fly wheel or a starter bendix and how do I tell. I know I should look closer but I am just so exited that the project is almost ready to go that i am going to bed and will read my options left by the gurus.

    If it engages OK after you turn the motor, it's the ring gear...
