I have searched and not found the answer.
I was going to remove the Carter YF carb on my F head for a rebuild. I disconnected the linkage and started for the 9/16 bolts and found the one on the passengers side apparently has to be removed second, it hit the bottom of the carb before it is free.
Sooo, I went for the one next to the valve cover, could not get a socket on it because it is just under the carb body. No room for an open end wrench so I am thinking maybe one of those open end wrenches that fits on the end of a socket extension? (of which I have none).
I also tried a swival 9/16, still not enough room.
I know plenty of guys have done this so let me in on the correct tool please.

I've had them off with just regular tools like you tried.

Or take a 9/16 box-end wrench - heat and bend it with two 45 degree bends to clear the valve cover. I love it!

The crows foot is ideal. If you dont have one along with trying all of the above you can try a thin wall 3/8 drive 12 point socket or sometimes a 1/4 drive socket will clear.

Removing the valve cover will gain you some room also.

I got out my trusty "GM" distributor wrench, worked like a charm to brake the nut free, then I could work it with a regular 9/16 open end wrench.
That's the good news, the bad new is one of the thottle shaft plate screws appeared to have been shot peened on the back side.
Of course I did not know this and twisted off the screw head when I went to disassemble the plate in prepreation for cleaning.
Tried to drill out what was left, it worked, but now the holes are not parallel and of course the one I drilled out does not have threads anymore.
I am open for suggestions on what to do next.
I bet the first suggestion is get a Solex.

That's not "shot" peened, rather just peened. It works doesn't it.:(
    I've done the same thing...

Patrick what do I do now. The holes are not even so the plate will not ride evenly.
Where in the world do I get another screw that small so I can "peen" the other side too.
I guess you could say it worked the first time, but I'm not sure about the seccond time.
I also have a bunch of small divits in the bowl, they are just about to go through but haven't yet.

When I pulled my throttle plate off, I was lucky and the screws came out without breaking. I got replacement screws at Ace Hardware. It's been awhile and I don't remember exactly, but IIRC they are an odd size and/or thread. By "odd", I mean like #3 or #5, maybe.

For the drilled-out screw, maybe line up the plate and redrill it to the next size screw. Or, maybe you could fill the hole with an epoxy (one which will tolerate gasoline) and redrill and tap it.
