I turned the key in my 81 Scrambler only to have it rotate completely with no responce from the starter motor. The key did not spring back to the on position, I had to return it from the start position myself. The key moves from off to start position but nothing happens. I removed the key cylinder and it looks ok. I touch the actuator rod as I turn the key and it moves. I removed the starter switch and find that it moves although its alittle rough. What puzzels me is the lack of spring return. Does anyone know what provides the spring return of the key cylinder? What next? It's a non-tilt stock column.

The spring is built into the ignition switch itself. Sounds like the ignition switch has failed.

Yep, mine did the same thing. The actuator rod just pushes into the ignition switch which has the spring inside it.
