Guys, I am stumped and need someone smarter than me. I have tried searching and am boggled with the results.

I found a warn overdrive and a twin stick dana 18. I am wondering if it will fit in my late 69 early 70 cj5.

It is a warn and is model 33-29, I will post pictures when I am at home and not at work.

My jeep has the three speed and 225 v6. I am hoping that this will work as I have been looking for an overdrive for a long time.

    Any help?

First we need to know which 3 speed you have. If stock it should be a T-14 which has a 10 spline output shaft. Only Jeep transmission to use the 10 spline output shaft by the way, all others were 6 spline.
Second we need to know if the transfer case you are looking at is a large hole or small hole input. If a large hole input it will physically bolt to the T-14 that requires the large hole transfer case. Lastly does the overdrive fit a 10 spline output shaft or a 6 spline output shaft? Sometimes you can match up parts that you need but without knowing what you are working with it's hard to tell you what will work with what.

One other thing, the 18 transfer case is not a "T-18" it is a Spicer 18 or Dana 18 or Dana/Spicer 18. T-18's are 4 speed truck style transmissions with a compound (granny) low that were made by Borg-Warner.

What kind of transfer case do you have now??

The Dana 18 needs to be paired with an offset pumpkin rear axle.

Just went through all this myself.

If you have the D 18 already, then I believe it should fit.

For best answers, seems the Guru is "Herm the overdrive guy"

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I went and picked up the overdrive, it is a six spline, 29 gear. I will have to look at my jeep when I get home from work. I am not sure of which transmission I have, I will have to look. I am hoping not a 10 spline.

Thanks again for your help. Mark

    68-71 3 speed was a T14, 10 spline, in stock form.

Glad to help. If your transmission is a T-14 and 10 spline you may be able to trade that 6 spline gear for a 10 spline unit. Pretty common to swap between the two. I'd put a want to swap ad on here and if that doesn't work or you are in a hurry then contact Herm. Good guy to deal with.
If you do have a T-14 then your existing transfer case will be a 29 tooth input (if stock) and so the overdrive should work on that end.

After looking at my transmission it has castings on the side of T14A-1.

Here are some pictures that I was able to take of the overdrive.

It is a front shifting model. What is the difference?

On the end where you have six splines, you need ten for a t-14. Call Herm or place a wtt in the classifieds. The front shift doesn't like the top of the t-14 either. You do however have the perfect od for someone with a t-90 and a 29 spline 18 tc.

I am wondering, if I ever decide to go with an sm420 transmission, which overdrive would work with Novak's adapter?

This is an upgrade that I would like to do in the future, and maybe it would be better to keep this overdrive? Any body have any advice on this?

The front shift case was made specifically for the t-90 trans that came in most all of the early Jeeps. It can be used with others with some creative fabrication of the shifter arm. It is not hard to switch the case and it is a good idea to have Herm go through one anyway as anything that is 40 years old may need some new bearings. I feel it is always better to have it looked at when everything is in one piece as opposed to something coming apart and making very expensive Swiss cheese.

I just looked and Novak has the shaft in both 10 spline and 6 spline so you could go either way with that. Like Daryl said, I'd have Herm go through it for you. You could switch to 10 spline to work with your current set up then when you purchase the adapter kit order it for the 10 spline unit. I would say that keeping it 6 spline does open up far more options if you decide you want to go another route though.

Hi Mark I have a 1960 CJ5 with the dauntless 225, SM 420, Dana 18, and the Warn overdrive. All these have been rebuilt by the previous owner. A good friend of mine that never takes any short cuts. I was going to post the overdrive for sale but I thought I see if you were interested first since you want the same SM420 set up. I am putting it up for sale for $800, Since it hardly has any miles on it. or if you need any info just ask and Ill try and help. Good luck John

You could always PM him as this thread is 6 months old, or just post it up in the classifieds section. Either way, please fill in your location on your profile as it always helps to know where the parts are.

you can mix/match the dana 18, as long as you use the proper gears. (ie: small hole to big hole). I used a twin stick off a '46 on mine. the barrel gear (the part with the splines in it) interchanges between 6 and 10 spline, but you MUST have the proper tooth count to match YOUR transfer case as there are 2 different low range ratios.
