When I hooked my fuel gauge up I mistakenly connected the sending unit wire to the post that has the solid bar to the temp gauge. The fuel and temp gauge didn't work. I found my mistake I corrected it, now the fuel gauge goes to full when I turn the ignition switch on. What did I do and how do I correct it.

Sounds like it shorted the resistor that is the sending unit..

Remove the wire on the sender. Connect your test light alligator clip to this wire. Poke the pointy end into a good ground and turn on the switch. The test light should flash and the gauge will rise off of empty and will head towards full. The reading E to F will depend on the resistance of the test light bulb. This will tell you if the gauge is good or not. If the test light does not blink and shows a steady solid light, then you have melted the contacts together in the regulator inside the fuel gauge.

OK I tested the fuel gauge as prescribed and it tested fine, the light blinked and the needle rose to a possition between E and F. How do I test the temp gauge, I thought I was supposed to have 5v on the copper bar between the fuel and temp gauge but I read nothing. What next.

So far so good. The 5 volts on the bar is an average reading between on and off 12v coming from the regulator (fuel). You may not be making a good ground connection with your meter lead. Put the alligator clip on the temp terminal that goes to the sender and ground the pointy end and with key on, the temp gauge should rise.
