i began brake replacement all the way around. the replacement wheel cylinder i bought does not entirely fill the hole in the backing plate. does this matter?

I just checked the old set I replaced a few years ago and there is a difference in size between front and rear cylinders. Might want to verify...

i am talking about the hole in the backing plate that the wheel cylinder mounts over. the brake line connection sticks through it. the one i removed fit perfectly in that hole. the replacement has some slop. well a lot. i cant see that this would be a problem unless a) it is the wrong cylinder b) dirt and grime get in faster.

the replacement wheel cylinder has the same number at the local stores..

Interesting. All the ones I've replaced for the last 15 or so years fit fairly well in the hole in the backing plate. Never had much slop. Might be cheap overseas made units or could be the wrong units. I've run into situations where the books/computers were wrong. What brake size are you dealing with? 11"? 10"? 9"?
I'm thinking maybe you got wheel cylinders for the wrong size brakes as I've run into wheel cylinders for say 9" that didn't fit correctly in 11" backing plates....

i have 9" brakes. wheel cylinder at the stores said it is for 9". i noticed that on kaiserwillys.com the cylinders for my model are 45.00 a piece where everywhere else they are 25.00. i wonder if i should just get the more expensive ones from kaiser.

That's a no brainer right there. When it comes to parts like that they are usually cheaper than everyone else and the parts are right on.

Except for the S tubes for the front wheel cylinders, the ones they sent me were about a 1/4" to long and if I didn't have the brake line bending pliers I probably would not have gotten them on right. Just a warning if you buy S tubes for your Jeep.

I bought wheel cylinders for my '69 Chevy short bed and went to put them on they weren't even close. I figured they gave me the wrong part #, but when I went back they looked up the part again, and the number was right. But the part in the box was COMPLETELY different than the first one.

You may want to try another local parts store if you don't want to have to wait.

Sounds like something is a muck?:?
    If.....
The 2 mounting holes line up correctly
the bore size is the same............
    The general measurement is correct....
and I was into it where it was all assembled.
    I MIGHT leave 'er be.
But, if it was still in pieces, I take them back and see what the story was.
Even a slightly different bore dia. will make a change in the braking, (different psi pushing out the brakes, I would think.. a smaller bore wheel cylinder would make MORE PSI pushing the brakes)
It's pretty easy to rebuild a old wheel cylinder, (as long as the bore isn't pitted too bad.
I'd take then back and try again...

I got my new rear wheel cylinder tuesday and it was the right one. I got it from car quest. The guy had to bust out the old school book to look up the number and it took three days to get here.

yeah. i dont know. i just dont have any luck with auto parts stores. i will return them. I have already ordered some new ones from kaiserwillys. it just sucks because the ones from kw are twice as much. i guess that is the price you pay for the correct parts.

The NAPA around here usually gouges you on prices. Maybe it is a area thing kind of like with insurance.

    <whispers> 11" brake conversion... 11" brake conversion...

Brake cylinders for the 11" brakes are 1/10 that much.

    For 9" or 11"?

RockAuto has Dorman cylinders for the 11" brakes for $4.87 or thereabouts. They have cheaper ones on closeout too.
