'67 CJ5 v6 gas tank problem

    I was wondering if anyone can tell me if my new plastic tank is going to supply fuel to my v6 properly. I bought the Jeep without a gas tank. I called 4wd hardware up to order a new one. I wasn't sure what I needed and was helped:? by the sales dept there. Long story short I have a tank that I think is supposed to supply a 4cyl eng because the pickup is 1/4". I received a wrong sending unit for the tank and while waiting for proper one I hooked up 1/4 rubber line that PO had installed and put duct tape over sending unit hole just so I could start the engine, to look for leaks etc. not to drive. I put some gas in the tank and primed the fuel pump and it started right up. Only ran ten minutes then lost prime. I asked on here and found out the engine had the wrong fuel pump, no return. So I get a new pump to find it has a 3/8 pickup port and 5/16 supply with 1/4 vent/return. I then realize I shouldn't have put gas in the tank 'cause I got the wrong tank mehh. So just out of curiosity can I hook up this tank using the 1/4 pickup at the tank? I planned on stepping up from 1/4 rubber over 5/16 steel then 5/16 rubber over the 3/8 pickup port on the fuel pump? Does anyone think this will "starve" the engine or cause any issues with the fuel pump? Or do I need to get the other tank? They didn't list an availble v6 sending unit for the o-ring which is why I agreed with the sales and got the six bolt sending unit tank.

    Terry Ackert at the Jeep farm in NY state said he bought one of those plastic tanks and they are very flimsy.

    Huh. My MTS poly tank is very stout. Has been for years.

    I don't think any auto engine should be a 1/4 fuel line...
    5/16 minimum
    is this pickup you refer to fixed ?
    my tanks are 4 cyl tanks with outlets on the bottom
    5/16 fittings for fuel
    no problems
    1/4 should be for return purposes only
    I don't run returns with my V6, no problems either.

    I just got one and it's gotta be at least 3/8" thick. Maybe thicker in spots. Not flimsy at all. I know several people running them and they've all been very happy with them.

    twotrackr,
    you refer to a 1/4 "pickup" if that is on top of tank, it is the return. Feed is out the bottom. I don't believe there is a V6 vs 4cyl difference in tanks.

    This is an aftermarket tank. There is a 1/4 barbed fitting that has the attached tube inside of tank that goes to the bottom of the tank. There is a sticker at that barbed fitting that says PICKUP in bold. There is another tapped port a few inches away, same size that I assume is the return. I have a 1/4" fitting I purchased to hook up the return there. There are no other fuel ports on the tank except the filler neck. I am not concerned with the strength of the tank. I just am trying to figure out if there is going to be an issue with the diameter. Can't get an answer from 4wd hardware and I am waiting for a response from mts regarding the pickup size.

    Ok. Just got off phone with MTS and he said 4wd orderded the wrong tank. The o-ring tank has a pickup built into the sending unit and is 5/16. But since I put gas in the tank I'm stuck with it. He did say all I have to do is pull the fitting and tube and unsolder the tube and install on a 5/16 fitting and I'll be ok. Luckily the fuel gauge is the same ohm rating for both sending units so all is good. Thanks for the quick reply's to my stupid problem.
