T86 to t90 questions

    I have several questions about going from a t86 to a t90.

    I want to but it in place of a t86 behind my V6. Not many T86s around for parts and mine doesn't stay in gear very well any more.

    Will the adapter on the front of the t86 work with the t90?

    What did the long shaft t90 come in? So I know what to look for. There are lots of Willys wagons up here to use as parts sources.

    Also has anyone used the factory motor mounts out of a v6 frame when converting from the f134 to the 225:v6: If you have any advise it would be apreciated.

    The long shaft T-90 was used in Utility trucks and wagons. You must use the long shaft if you are connecting the T-90 to any engine other than the F134 (or the 2000/23000 Pinto). Typically the long shaft is used with an aftermarket adapter and automotive bell to connect to a GM or Ford engine.

    I presume the V6 adapter used with the T-86 is the same length as the aftermarket adapters, but I'm not absolutely certain. I'm fairly certain that the bolt pattern of the T-86 is the same as the T-14 and T-15, which is different from the T-90. This means that you cannot bolt the T-90 to the T-86 adapter without some machining, if at all. However, you can take the T-90 gears and install them ina T-86 case, then everything will bolt together. I have not done this, but it is a fairly common procedure ... becasue of the wide availability of T-90s and a shortage of parts for the T-86. I presume you'll need all the gears from a T-90A, plus the long input shaft, plus your rebuild parts.

    The standard T86AA bellhousing adapter is 2-5/8" thickness.
    Aftermarket Buick to T90 J adapters are also 2-5/8 thickness.
    The T90 J is the long maindrive gear (input) version of the T90.
    The T90 J maindrive gear stickout length is 9-1/2" or 11-1/2 OAL.
    These are used with the common 6-3/8 inch deep BOP bellhousings.
    The T86AA case with T90 components can be bolted directly to a Dauntless.
    This is accomplished by using the 9" deep 1971 Jeep bellhousing, therefore no adapters are needed.

    Aftermarket adapters allow you to use the T-90 in its own case.
    The adapter converts the T90 bolt partern to the common small GM pattern.
    The early standard Jeep bellhousing index is 4-1/4" whereas the BOP is 4-11/16".
    A Buick to T90 J adapter allows use of the T86AA bearing retainer.
    Some but not all T-90 adapters provide a seal for the transmission maindrive gear.

    You can use the factory mounts if you wish (I have done it several times this way). I do however prefer the Novak Mounts over the factory ones.

    I used the factory frame mounts for my flatfender.
    No fab needed, just tack weld them in till everything else was figured out.
    I did have to notch the drivers side for the existing steering shaft, no big deal.
    I suppose it might be easier with the novak mounts, steering shaft wise.
    But that depends on what steering your going to use.
    The one set of Novak mounts I helped with I didn't like; that's my personal opinion.

    I like the Novak mounts. One of the neat things is you can pull the rubber doughnut out and tip the engine forward to reach the bell housing bolts for a re-engine leaving the trans & transfer case in place.
