I agree with the stock manifolds idea...they are tough and will last for ever. Another idea is us stock manifolds with dual exhaust from his local muffler shop. Our shop here will build a nice set for just under 200 bucks that is not too loud yet sounds great on the street. Also, if he uses stock manifolds, install new studs and nuts, well worth the effort and expense, as is anti-sieze.

That's what I did, stock manifolts into dual glass packs. Not as loud as you'd expect. It sounds awesome. I made sure to tuck it all between the frame rails and so far, the only thing that has even dented my exhaust has been a broken driveshaft flopping around.

Are you sure you need cats? What year is the jeep? I doubt any intermediate jeep came with cats from the factory, but I could be wrong.

    DrDanteIII,

Yup. Need cats, mufflers, smog pump, charcoal canister, LCV, etc.... Have to emissions test her EVERY year...anything post 1967....a serious pain, but when I'm on the trail....well worth it! :)

Don't mean to hyjack this post. I am dealing with the same issue right now. Have '73 with 304 V8 that I just removed my rusted exhaust from this weekend. Want to keep the original manifolds on, but can't find the front pipe anywhere. Hoping local muffler shop can fab one up for me.

Any recommendations on staying with Y-downpipe to single or switching to dual exhaust?

Either way will do just fine, usually the single exhaust will be a bit cheaper to build, but just make sure you have piping at least 2 and 1/4 inch (factory spec I think) or the 304 will overheat at high rpms. I had only 2 inch originally, had a major overheating problem and couldn't for the life of me figure out what the problem was.....sure enough...exhaust.

Great! Thanks for the help. Stopped by my local muffler shop and they can fab one for me. Had to order the damper today (old one was broken in half). Going with the single exhaust. Will post pics next week once I get it on. Thanks again

A '75 CJ with a 304 came with a catalytic convertor. First year, AFAIK.
