Posted this on another Jeep related forum, haven't gotten any responses yet, but I thought I'd come here since since there's probably more CJ5 knowledge here.

Anyone know what steering columns cross over to a 75 CJ5? Tilt/no-tilt, doesn't matter, just need direction (pun intended).

Prefer junk-yard finds..and if you're in Houston and you've got what I'm looking for, let's talk.

Lots of stuff on steering conversions in the forums here.

Most common are GM style column conversions (including later CJ columns), that's where I'd start searching.

How much do you know about the original column? AFAIK no other vehicle used a column like that. The original column is basically a metal tube with the big black bus wheel on top.

From '76 on, Jeep used a GM-sourced column, which is similar to many other GM columns.

What are you trying to do?

Zero - and it looked nothing like that column. It looked a little more modern than a tube with a bus wheel on top.

I'm really just trying to find a suitable replacement steering column. The previous column was in bad shape (at least in my estimation it was).

You probably have a GM column then (just a guess). Is the ignition in the column? Would help to have a pic of it.

If it's a GM column just do a search on "column swap" "GM column" or something similar...you'll get lots of hits and discussion on which cars to pull them from and how easy or hard it is.

heh - the ignition was in the column and positioned about 6 o'clock (did I mention the previous column was completely wasted?). I guess, now that I think about it, it did look a little GM'ish - especially with the Grant steering wheel with the splitting wheel cover.

I searched, as recommended, and immediately felt like an internet noob. Lots of good info - looks like a 31" GM steering column should work - now to find a Houston salvage yard that has one for a decent price. Whoever it was that swapped in a Caddy column (tilt & telescope) caught my attention, so I'll look for one of those first.
