My project has been on the road working great now for a month, (OK, so I've only driven it 300 miles, but I haven't walked yet)!
    It's a '74 CJ5 with power steering.
One thing that is scary is that it "twitchy" in the steering department.
it has all new tie rods, new leaf spring bushings, the PS box is sound, no play, the steering is as good as it gets.
If, if, if I put a steering dampner on, will that "slow", "un-twitch" it down some?
It's all stock ('cept the fiberglass body), and I'm not really gonna start swapping different stuff, I (for some reason) haven't the need to "Frankstien" this jeep, (old age creeping in??).
I haven't had a "newer" jeep in quite a while, (last 3 were all before '65, with the Ross system), and I installed dampners to make them all nicey nice.
But, a dampner on PS, will it do the same??

Did you hug your jeep today?,

    What's the toe-in and caster?

A steering damper was a common warranty repair for these Jeeps. However, it was in response to a shake in the steering wheel at 40-50 and not because the steering is overly sensitive. Something is wrong if it does not drive down the road easy.

Check the alignment measurements/adjustments as Timgr suggested. Also check for play in the steering shaft going to the box, the column for loose bushings, steering gear mountings for looseness/cracks, etc. Also how much lift? Bump steer can cause this if the drag link angle is too steep. Also, what steering gear box is installed? How many turns lock to lock? If a very quick ratio it can cause the Jeep to be "twitchy" driving down the road.

    Thats' right!
I remember installing them on a few pickup trucks cuz the steering wheel would whip left and right, you think it was a bad drag link or axle sway bar bushings or.... and it'd be zip. I'd install them and think it was a "band-aide" not a fix.
The front end on this jeep is all new parts, or mostly new
    The toe is 1/8" in
Can't remember the caster, camber settings, but they were in the middle of the specs.
    235/15 tires, at 32 PSI
    No body lift
Hardly any steer shaft play, actually next to none.
The steering box is bolted tight on the frame
Nothing cracked, bend, spindled or broken.
This jeep had a easy life. The farmer who had it never took it off, (or on road for that matter).
The jeep went 3/4 of a mile down a dirt road from the barn to the house and back, all it's life- hence the 42,000 miles total!
3 3/4 turns lock to lock on the steering, so it is quick.
It could just be the jeep, like I've stated, I'm used to the "Arm Strong" steering, combine the quick steering with the HUGE steering wheel.
I've adjusted to the "twitchness, "quickness" of the steering, but man, sneeze and turn the wheel, your in the next county!

A good jeep glove box contains a old rusty coil, assorted nuts and bolts, (none match!), a few fuses, a bulb or 2 and-I dunno what THAT is!:flag:
