Is there a way to tell if a Dana 44 rear end on a 67 has a limited slip or locker by reading the numbers on the axle? When going through a mudhole I had junk slinging out behind both tires. I'd like to figure this out without pulling the diff cover. There are no wires or tubes going into the axle.

jack the rear up, when you turn the drive shaft the wheels should turn in opposite directions for opened and the same for a locker.

    That sounds simple enough, thanks.

that would also work for limited slip or posi. best way for locker is to jack one side up and start it up and slowly put in gear. the wheel off the ground should start to turn then lock and both wheels will grab. also you should only be able to the turn the wheel off the ground about 1/2 a turn then it will lock. a limited slip will keep turning but hard, with some resistance.

I'd pull the cover. It's the best way to know what you have. It's probably a good idea to change the gear oil anyway.

First rule of owning a Jeep is to always change all the fluids when you obtain a new-to-you Jeep.

A factory limited-slip will have an extra tag under one of the cover bolts that says to use limited slip oil. You can also ID the axle from the Jeep PN on the other tag.

My friend had the same problem with a loose ring gear bolt in his MB. Only thing is that he wasn't as lucky as you were. The way he found out was the loose bolt found its way between the ring and pinion...ouch!

I agree, open it up and take a look. I thought I was fortuante to have a locker in mine. Turned out to be a Trac Lock. After blowing it apart for the third time I replaced it with a Detroit. Maybe you will be lucky enough to have a Power Lok.

I put a new gasket and fluid in it when I got it about 18 months ago. I just wasn't smart or knowledgeable enough to pay attention. Apparently I didn't take any pictures either. Running through the mud got me thinking though. Junk was flying from both rear wheels. is it possible they were alternating garbbing?

Posi (the Power-Lock in 1967) was a common option for a Jeep. Plus it's a popular add-on. If both wheels are spinning at the same time, you can be sure you have some kind of posi or locker in the axle.

If you have equal traction or slippage between the tires then it will give the impression of a limited slip or locker because both tires are spinning. Only when the traction is different between the right and left wheels will they turn at different speeds. Example, one tire on ice, one on hard pack ground. One tire will spin (the one on ice) while the other doesn't. Seen it a bunch of times. People claim they have "posi" because both tires are spinning, but only because they have the same lack of traction on both sides equally and in fact they don't have a traction aiding device....
